Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá různými formami identity, jak jsou vykresleny v díle současného amerického spisovatele Paula Austera. Cílem práce je podrobně analyzovat problém identity ve třech Austerových dílech: Vynález samoty (1982), Newyorská trilogie (1985) a Travels in the Scriptorium (2007) a najít společné rysy hlavních postav a paralely v jejich pátrání po identitě. Z práce vyplývá, že Austerovi představitelé procházejí analogickým vývojem: nejprve jsou odsunuti, stahují se do ústranní, jsou ztraceni sami v sobě a nakonec se snaží najít cestu do svého nitra skrze psaní. Dále práce řeší otázku autorovy identity a překračování ontologických hranic mezi skutečným a fiktivním světem.

Abstract:

The present Master's Diploma thesis deals with various aspects of identity as they are depicted in writing by a contemporary American writer Paul Auster. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the problem of identity in three Auster's works: The Invention of Solitude (1982), The New York Trilogy (1985) and Travels in the Scriptorium (2007) and to find common features of the protagonists and parallels in their searches for identity. It follows from the analysis that Auster's protagonists undergo an analogical development: first they are displaced, retreat into solitude, get lost within themselves and finally try to find the way into their inner self. The thesis also deals with the question of author's identity and crossing of ontological boundaries between the real and fictional worlds.
