Discussion in the recent Slovak historiography about the Slovak state in 1939-1945

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o Slovenském štátě mezi lety 1939 – 1945 se zaměřením na diskuzi současné slovenské historiografie o úloze a významu Slovenského štátu. Nahlíží na některé aspekty Slovenského štátu, jako na jeho vznik, hospodářství, osobnosti aj. Samostatnou kapitolou je tzv. „židovská otázka“, její vývoj a rozhodnutí kompetentních osob ohledně jejího řešení. Práce se snaží o srovnání pohledu dvou názorových proudů uvnitř slovenské historiografie, kdy jeden z nich pohlíží na Slovenský štát za pomoci kritické analýzy, druhý pak pozitivně s glorifikací vedoucích postav Slovenska a jejich rozhodnutí. Třetí skupinou jsou historikové, kteří se snaží o neutrální pohled a ve svých názorech se přiklání na jednu či druhou stranu. Jedním z cílů práce byla také snaha o širší pohled na některé z nejdiskutovanějších témat Slovenského štátu, jako je např. otázka Slovenského národního povstání a jeho významu pro budoucnost Slovenska.

Abstract:

This thesis concerns the so called Slovak state, which existed since 1939 to 1945, and it is focused on the recent Slovak historiography discussion about the role and significance of the Slovak state. The work regards some aspects of the Slovak state, as its inception, economy, personalities and so on. Separate chapter is dedicated to the so called „Jewish question“, its development and the decisions of the competent authorities for its solvement. The work tries to compare the points of view of the both main streams in the Slovak historiography. One of them sees the Slovak state with the aid of critical analysis. The other one is positivist and regards the Slovak state, its leading figures and their decisions with glorification. There is also the third group, which is compounded of the historians, who try to work with neutral feelings to the period and oscillate between both groups. One of the aims of the presented thesis was also to create a wider comparison of the opinions on the most discussed topics of the Slovak state as, for example the question of the Slovak National Uprising and its importance for the future development of Slovakia.
