Digitalization of spectometric system for mixed field of fast neutrons and gamma radiation

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá digitálním zpracováním výstupních signálů impulzních detektorů záření. Nejvíce pozornosti bylo věnováno detektorům, jejichž výstupní impulzy nesou svojí amplitudou informaci o energii zanechanou detekovanou částicí v detektoru a časový průběh výstupních impulzů obsahuje informaci o typu detekované částice. Typickými představiteli takových detektorů jsou organické scintilátory typu stilben a NE-213 (resp BC-501 A) a proporcionální detektory plněné vodíkem. Obojí detektory se používají hlavně ve spektrometrii směsného pole neutronů a záření gama. V práci jsou uvedeny výsledky postupů, kdy výstupní signál z detektoru je hned za výstupem digitalizován a dále zpracováván jen numericky. Digitalizace byla realizována několika komerčně získanými zařízeními - digitizéry. Byly hledány parametry digitizerů, jako např. vhodná vzorkovací frekvence, rozlišení výstupního kvantování, dosažení potřebného dynamického rozsahu apod., vedoucí k optimálním datům pro další softwarové zpracování. Následné softwarové zpracování vede k určení amplitudy každého impulzu (míra deponované energie interagující částice v detektoru) a typu detekující částice. K tomuto účelu byla testována řada matematických metod vedoucích k stanovení obou parametrů. Jako rozhodovací kritérium sloužila funkce kvality definovaná pro daný účel. Získané poznatky vedly k stanovení funkčních vlastností zařízení vyvíjeného v rámci projektu TAČR SPEKTRUM dvoj-parametrického spektrometru vhodného zejména pro spektrometrii směsného pole neutronů a záření gama. Výsledkem je spektrometrický systém dosahující zcela špičkových vlastností.

Abstract:

The work deals with digital processing of output signals of impulse radiation detectors. Most of the attention was paid to detectors whose output impulses carry their amplitude information about energy left by the detected particle in the detector and the time course of output impulses contains information about the type of the particle being detected. Typical representatives of such detectors are organic scintillators type stilbene and NE-213 (BC-501 A, respectively) and hydrogen-filled proportional detectors. Both types of detectors are used mainly in spectrometry of a mixed field of neutrons and gamma radiation. The work presents results of procedures when the output signal from a detector is digitalized immediately behind the output and further processed only numerically. Digitization was realized with several commercially obtained devices – digitizers. Parameters leading to optimal data for further software processing, such as a suitable sampling frequency, output quantization resolution, reach of the required dynamic range etc., were searched for. The following software processing leads to determination of an amplitude of each impulse (the range of deposited energy of the interacting particle in the detector) and type of the detecting particle. For this purpose a number of mathematical methods leading to setting of both parameters were tested. The quality function defined for this purpose was used as the decisive criterion. Gained findings lead to the setting of functional properties of the device that was developed within the project TAČR SPEKTRUM of a two-parameter spectrometer suitable especially for spectrometry of a mixed field of neutrons and gamma radiation. The result is a spectrometric system that reaches absolutely excellent properties.
