Discourse Markers in Contemporary French: Linguistic and Didactic Perspective

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the phenomenon of discourse markers in the context of teaching French as a foreign language. It introduces the long-neglected topic drawing upon the traditional monographs (by Fernandez and by Schiffrin) and recent research articles discussing the functions of discourse markers primarily in French and in English. Within this methodological framework the author reveals the essential role discourse markers play in the semantics, syntax, and pragmatics of spontaneous speech. The study also argues that the low status these expressions tend to have in the eyes of native speakers has translated into their under-representation in the teaching of French to non-native users. Mastering discourse markers, at the same time, is indispensable in the development of students’ speaking skills in French and should not be ignored even at the elementary level of their language competence (according to CEFR). The key contribution of the thesis can be seen in its focus on the methodology of teaching discourse markers to secondary school students: it proposes three model lesson plans, which were tested at Matyáš Lerch Gymnázium in Brno.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem „marqueurs discursifs“ ve výuce francouzštiny jako cizího jazyka. Tato dlouho opomíjená problematika je představena syntézou poznatků tradičních monografií (Fernandez, Schiffrin) i aktuálních studií reflektujících fungování „marqueurs discursifs“ zejména ve francouzském a anglickém jazyce. Na tomto teoretickém základě autorka obhajuje sémantickou, syntaktickou a pragmatickou nezastupitelnost „marqueurs discursifs“ ve spontánních nepřipravených projevech. Práce zároveň poukazuje na fakt, že nízká prestiž těchto výrazů v očích rodilých mluvčích zapříčinila nedostatečné začlenění tohoto tématu do výuky francouzštiny jako cizího jazyka. Autorka nicméně zdůrazňuje, že zvládnutí „marqueurs discursifs“ hraje klíčovou roli na cestě ke spontánnímu mluvenému projevu ve francouzštině, a to již od nejnižších jazykových úrovní (bráno podle Společného evropského referenčního rámce). Hlavním přínosem práce je pak pokus o didaktické uchopení problematiky v rámci třech po sobě následujících lekcích, které byly realizovány se studenty Gymnázia Matyáše Lercha v Brně.
