Information and communication technologies in the work of German language teachers

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá informačními a komunikačními technologiemi (ICT) v práci učitelů německého jazyka. Práce je uspořádána podle tradičního schématu: teorie – metodologie – empirická zjištění. Teoretická část je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. Představuje komplexní úvod do problematiky implementace informačních a komunikačních technologií ve výuce cizích jazyků a tvoří interpretační rámec pro empirickou část práce. V první kapitole jsou uvedeny hlavní společenské změny posledních desetiletí, hlavní pozornost je zaměřena na vliv moderních technologií na transformační proces ve vzdělávání. Druhá kapitola je věnována vývoji výuky cizích jazyků. Důraz je kladen na nejvýznamnější učební teorie a metodické přístupy k výuce cizích jazyků. Popsány jsou hlavní charakteristiky moderního vyučování cizích jazyků. Třetí kapitola poskytuje vhled do rolí a kompetencí učitele, především při výuce s podporou technologií. Čtvrtá kapitola se zaměřuje na implementaci ICT ve výuce cizích jazyků, na její výhody a nevýhody. V této kapitole je rovněž uveden přehled faktorů (založený na empirických zjištěních), které ovlivňují úspěšné začleňování technologií do procesu výuky. Výsledky výzkumu, který byl realizován na základě kvalitativní výzkumné metodologie, jsou interpretovány v empirické části práce. Cílem výzkumného projektu bylo odpovědět na hlavní výzkumnou otázku: Jak učitelé německého jazyka používají informační a komunikační technologie ve své práci? Hlavní výzkumná otázka byla rozdělena na tři specifické otázky: 1. Jaké didaktické funkce zastávají ICT v práci respondentů?, 2. Zda a jak jejich způsoby používání informačních a komunikačních technologií korespondují s didakticko-metodickými principy soudobé výuky německého jazyka?, 3. Jaké faktory přispívají k tomu, že respondenti začleňují informační a komunikační technologie do své výuky? Data byla získána technikami polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se čtrnácti českými učiteli němčiny (ze šesti gymnázií) a pozorováním jejich výuky. Při analýze dat bylo vyzkoumáno šest didaktických funkcí technologií v práci respondentů. Didaktické funkce nejsou nutně spojeny s určitými didakticko-metodickými rysy výuky. Technologicko-didaktická kompetence učitele je jednou z hlavních podmínek výuky v souladu s didakticko-metodickými principy soudobé výuky němčiny. Mezi další faktory patří vliv inovativních kolegů a didaktického zpracování výukových materiálů. Důležitou roli hrají při začleňování ICT do práce respondentů také reflexe přínosu ICT učitelem, podpora vedení školy a pozitivní hodnocení výuky s ICT žáky (a jejich dovednosti). V závěrečné kapitole jsou empirická zjištění porovnávána s dalšími výzkumnými závěry a s teoriemi popsanými v teoretické části práce.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the information and communication technologies in the work of German language teachers. It is organized according to the traditional scheme: theory - methodology - empirical findings. The theoretical part consists of four chapters. It presents a comprehensive introduction into the issues of implementation of information and communication technologies in teaching foreign languages and provides an interpretative framework for the empirical part. The first chapter introduces the main changes in our society in the last decades, focusing on the influence of modern technologies on the transformation process in education. The second chapter is devoted to the development of teaching of foreign languages. The emphasis is placed on the main teaching (learning) theories and methodical approaches. The most important characteristics of modern teaching of foreign languages are described. The third chapter provides insight into the role and competencies of the teacher, especially in the computer assisted teaching. The fourth chapter details the implementation of ICT in foreign language teaching, its advantages and disadvantages. The chapter also includes a survey of factors that influence the implementation of ICT in teaching, based on empirical findings. The findings of the research that was carried out on the basis of the qualitative research methodology are interpreted in the research part of the thesis. Its goal was to answer the main research question: How do the teachers of German as a foreign language use information and communication technologies in their work? The main research question was divided into three specific questions: 1. Which didactic functions do the ICT have in the work of respondents?, 2. Does the computer-assisted teaching of respondents respect the didactic-methodic principles of modern foreign language teaching and how?, 3. Which factors stimulate the respondents to use the ICT in their work? The data were gained from the semi-structured interviews with fourteen Czech teachers of German as a foreign language (teaching at six grammar schools) and from the observation of their lessons. The analysis of data revealed six didactic functions of ICT in the work of respondents. The didactic functions are not necessarily connected with the particular didactic-methodic features. The technological-didactic competency is one of the main conditions of teaching in accordance with the modern didactic-methodical principles of teaching. The influence of innovative colleagues and teaching materials were discovered as other important factors. The reflection of the computer-assisted teaching by teachers, the support of the school director, of colleagues and the positive evaluation of computer-assisted lessons by pupils (and their skills) play a significant role in the effective use of technologies as well. In conclusion, the empirical findings of the research are compared with other findings and with the theories that were described in the theoretical part of the thesis. The author calls for additional empirical research dealing with technologies in teaching of foreign languages.
