Birth of Counterintuitiveness: Counterintuitiveness of Beliefs in People with Schizophrenia and Psycho-spiritual Crisis

Abstract:

Téma práce je založeno na diskusi o šíření náboženských myšlenek, konkrétně na teorii minimální kontraintuitivity v ontologických kategoriích (Boyer, 2001). Tato teorie předpokládá, že pojmy, které narušují ontologické kategorie, jsou více zapamatovatelné. Nicméně za předpokladu, že všechny ostatní věci jsou stejné. Práce dodává inovativní pohled na pole výzkumu kontraintuitivity, protože zkoumá nevšední zážitek jako halucinace a vize účastníků, jako by byly zdrojem kontraintuitivních konceptů. Hlavní linie argumentace je položena ve výzkumech zkoumajících objevování se mytických prvků v halucinacích nebo vizích (Perry 1974; Lukoff & Everest, 1985; Grof, Grofová, 1999). Z tohoto důvodu byli pro výzkum vybráni lidé se schizofrenií a psychospirituální krizí, u kterých je očekávána vyšší míra výskytu náboženských prvků v jejich zkušenostech oproti běžné populaci. Metodologicky byla práce postavena na způsobu kódování kontraintuitivních konceptů v textech, který byl vytvořen J. Barretem (2008). Data v podobě rozhovoru, byla získána od 6 respondentů (3 se schizofrenií a 3 s psychospirituální krizí). Tyto rozhovory byly soustředěny okolo zkušeností (halucinací a vizí) respondentů. Tato práce ukazuje, že kontraintuitivní koncepty jsou přítomny v halucinacích a vizích respondentů podobným způsobem jako v mýtech a lidových příbězích, které byly studovány v posledních 15 letech.

Abstract:

Theme of this thesis is based on the debate about spreading religious ideas, specifically on the theory of minimal counterintuitiveness in ontological categories (Boyer, 2001). This theory assumes that the concepts, which undermine the ontological categories, are more memorable. However, under the condition that all other things are equal. The thesis adds innovative view to the science knowledge about counterintuitiveness, because it studies unusual experience as hallucinations and vision of participants as if they are source of counterintuitive concepts. The main line of argumentation lies in the research of appearance of mythical and religious elements in hallucinations or visions (Perry 1974; Lukoff & Everest, 1985; Grof, Grofová, 1999). Therefore, people with schizophrenia and spiritual emergency were chosen as the groups, which have high possibility of occurrence of the religious elements in their experience. Methodology was built on the method of coding counterintuitive concepts in texts which was created by J. Barret (2008). Data in the form of interview, were obtained from 6 respondents (3 with schizophrenia and 3 with spiritual emergency). These interviews were focused on respondents’ experience (hallucinations and visions). The thesis shows that counterintuitive concept are present in the hallucinations and visions of respondents in a similar way as in the myths and folktales, which were studied for last 15 years.
