Self-esteem in adolescence: the role of upbringing and adolescents' coping strategies

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat, jakým způsobem výchova ovlivňuje sebehodnocení mladých ve střední adolescenci s ohledem na copingové strategie adolescentů, jakožto moderátorů tohoto vztahu. Na základě literatury bylo předpokládáno, že pokud mají rodiče negativní emoční vztah k adolescentovi, ale adolescent bude používat aktivní copingové strategie (řešení problému, hledání sociální podpory), bude tato copingová strategie sloužit jako protektivní faktor pro jeho sebehodnocení. Pokud bude adolescent ve výše popsané situaci používat vyhýbavý coping, dojde naopak k poklesu jeho sebehodnocení. Pro účel této studie byla použita data z Evropského longitudinálního výzkumu těhotenství a dětství (ELSPAC). Ve výzkumu byly získány informace o sebehodnocení 728 adolescentů ve věku 15 let narozených v Brně. Sebehodnocení bylo měřeno 10 položkovou Rosenbergovou škálou sebehodnocení. Copingové strategie adolescentů byly zjišťovány pomocí dotazníku CTK a styl výchovy pomocí Dotazníku pro zjišťování způsobu výchovy v rodině. Mnohonásobná regresní analýza neodhalila moderační vliv copingových strategií ve vztahu vnímaného způsobu výchovy v rodině adolescentem na jeho sebehodnocení. Slabý vliv na sebehodnocení měl pouze emoční vztah rodičů a copingová strategie skrývání problému. Možné důvody pro nenalezení vztahu a limity této práce jsou diskutovány.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to investigate how parenting styles influence self-esteem of adolescents in regard to adolescents´coping strategies as moderators of this relationship. Based on the literature I assumed that if parents have negative emotional relationship toward their child (adolescent), but the adolescent engage in active coping strategies (problem solving, social support seeking), this strategy will serve as protective factor for adolescent´s self-esteem. But if adolescent engage in avoidant coping in the same context, this strategy will lead to decrease of adolescent´s self-esteem. The data form European Longitudinal Study of Precgnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC) were used in this analyse. Information about self-esteem of 728 fifteen years old respondents born in Brno was collected. Self-esteem was measured by Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale which consisted of 10 items. Coping strategies were assessed by CTK questionnaire and parenting style by Parenting styles questionnaire. Multiple linear regression model didn´t reveal moderation effect of coping strategies in the relationship between perceived parenting style and adolescent´s self-esteem. Weak effect was found only between parental emotional relationship toward adolescent and adolescent´s self-esteem and between avoidant coping and adoelscent´s self-esteem. Possible reasons for absence of the effect are discussed.
