Dermatoglyphic Manifestations of Transsexualism

Abstract:

Jedna z teorií etiologie pohlavní identity pokládá za důležitý faktor on-togeneze neuronálního základu pohlavní identity prenatální pohlavní hormony. Jelikož jsou dermatoglyfické znaky na prstech lidské ruky během vývoje ovlivňovány prenatálními androgeny, mohly by pohlavně atypické projevy dermatoglyfů u transsexuálních jedinců být dokladem role dysbalancí v množství prenatálních androgenů při vzniku transsexuality. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda se dermatoglyfické vzory na prs-tech ruky transsexuálů liší od dermatoglyfických vzorů srovnávacího souboru příslušného biologického pohlaví a zda se podobají vzorům typickým pro jejich psychické pohlaví. Studie je založena na skenech rukou vzorku 42 transsexuálních mužů a 11 transsexuálních žen z české populace. Dermatoglyfické vzory distálních článků prstů ruky byly následně zpracovány tradiční dermatoglyfickou metodikou v programu Dermatoglyphix. Transsexuální muži měli hodnoty dermatoglyfických znaků mezi hodnotami obvyklými pro cissexuální muže a hodnotami obvyklými pro cissexuální ženy, zatímco transsexuální ženy se svými hodnotami podobaly cissexuálním mužům. Vzhledem k malému vzorku je tyto výsledky vhodné ověřit dalšími výzkumy, zejména u transsexuálních žen, aby bylo možné potvrdit konkrétní zjištění. V obecné rovině však výsledky naznačují, že mezi transsexualitou a dermatoglyfikou prstů existuje spojení, které nevylučuje uplatnění prenatálních androgenů v etiologii pohlavní identity.

Abstract:

One theory of the etiology of gender identity considers prenatal sex hormones to be an important factor in the ontogenesis of the neurological basis of gender identity. Since the dermatoglyphic characteristics on the fingers of the human hand are influenced by prenatal androgens during the development, the sexually atypical manifestations of dermatoglyphs in transsexual individuals could be an evidence of the role of imbalances in the amount of prenatal androgens in the development of transsexuality. The aim of this study was to determine whether the dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers of transsexuals differ from those of a comparison group of the respective biological sex and whether they resemble the patterns typical of their gender. The study is based on hand scans of a sample of 42 transsexual men and 11 transsexual women from the Czech population. Dermatoglyphic patterns of the distal phalanges of the hand were then processed using traditional dermatoglyphic methodology in the Dermatoglyphix program. The transsexual men had the values of their dermatoglyphic characteristics between those typical for cissexual men and those typical for cissexual women, while the transsexual women had values similar to those of cissexual men. Given the small sample size, these results should be verified by further research, particularly in transsexual women, to confirm specific findings. In general, however, the results suggest that there is an association between transsexuality and finger dermatoglyphics that does not rule out the involvement of prenatal androgens in the etiology of gender identity.
