A positive theory of corruption: Costs and benefits

Abstract:

The following paper is dedicated corruption in contemporary social life and in entrepreneurship area. The present diploma thesis deals with a positive theory of corruption and relevant costs and benefits. Theoretical part of the thesis considers different approaches to the definitions of corruption as well as causes of the corruption emergence. Furthermore, the theoretical parts is dedicated to the classification of corruption as a socio-economic phenomenon and to certain theoretical conception of this phenomenon.The practical part of the diploma thesis conducts the comparison of the level of corruption in different countries of the world and determines the influence degree of corruption for an entrepreneurship environment. In the process of comparing corruption levels in various countries, objective and subjective factors are taken into account. By the end of the paper we will come to the conclusion that it is difficult to estimate exact numbers of corruption profits, which is received only by a limited group of individuals, while damages from corruption are spread to the entire economy and its distinctive sectors. Any type of corruption has a negative influence on business environment, since it affects competitiveness and businesses’ income.
