Caring for patients with malaria in Nigeria

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je popsat péči o pacienty s malarickou infekcí v zemi západní Afriky - v Nigérii. Práce je koncipována jako kazuistika dvou pediatrických pacientů, kteří byli hospitalizováni v nemocnici Seventh-day Adventist Hospital ve městě Ile-Ife v Nigérii během srpna 2017. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a empirickou. Teoretická část popisuje základní informace o vybraném onemocnění, hojně rozšířeném v tropické subsaharské Africe. Zabývá se historií, etiologií a epidemiologií malárie, diagnostikou, léčbou a komplikacemi. Dále je zaměřena na prevenci tohoto nakažlivého onemocnění, a to farmakologickou i nefarmakologickou. Součástí práce je vhled do ošetřovatelské péče, jež poskytují všeobecné sestry nemocným nakaženým malarickou infekcí. V empirické části popisuje bakalářská práce pomocí případové studie kazuistiky dvou vybraných pacientů s přihlédnutím k potřebám pacientů v jedné z nejchudších nigérijských nemocnic a s ohledem na místní podmínky. Je rozdělena na anamnézu, katamnézu, analýzu a interpretaci u obou pacientů. V závěru je doplněna diskuzí, kde jsou předkládaní pacienti a jejich léčba srovnáváni s již existujícími studiemi a odbornou literaturou. Zajímavou součástí bakalářské práce je pohled na prožívání nemoci místními lidmi a jejich chování při prevenci a léčbě nemoci, která je v jejich podmínkách velmi běžná, ale přesto nebezpečná a mnohdy obávaná.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the care of patients infected with malaria in a West African country - Nigeria. The thesis is composed of case studies of two pediatric patients, who were admited in the Seventh-day Adventist Hospital in Ile-Ife, Nigeria during August 2017. The thesis is devided into two parts - the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part is describing basic information about malaria, a disease widely spread throughout the tropical Sub Saharan Africa. It includes history, etiology and epidemiology of the disease, diagnostics, treatment and complications. It also focuses on prevention of malaria, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. The thesis also includes desciption of the nursing care rendered by general nurses to patients with malaria. In the empirical part, the thesis is describing two cases of malaria patients, including the needs of patients in one of Nigerian poorest hospitals and in regard to the local conditions. This part is devided into medical history, catamnesis, analysis and interpration of each case. At the end there is a discussion of the two cases and their treatment, which includes comparison with already existing scientific studies and literature. An interesting part of the thesis is an insight into the inner experience of the local people suffering malaria and their behavior concerning prevention and treatment of a sickness, which is very common in this area, yet still very dangerous and often dreaded.
