The Transformation of the Golem Legend in the Novel "Golem" by Gustav Meyrink

Abstract:

The topic of the diploma thesis is the analysis of Golem's substance in Gustav Meyrink's novel "Golem". Attention is paid to the history and development of the originally Kabbalistic legend about the Golem and its radical transformation by Meyrink. In his conception, the Golem is not, unlike the original versions, a clay figure, but a ghost with oriental features, appearing in certain historical moments in the Prague ghetto. The diploma thesis researches why and how Meyrink transformed the character of the Golem against the traditional legend, what role Meyrink's influence on the occult and other mystical teachings, his interest in spiritualism and oriental teachings played. The diploma thesis deals with the thesis if Meyrink's negative experience with his stay in Prague also played a role in the transformation of his Golem. The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze why and how Meyrink transformed the character of the Golem.

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je analýza golemovské látky v románu "Golem" Gustava Meyrinka. Pozornost je věnována historii a vývoji původně kabalistické pověsti o Golemovi a její radikální transformaci u Meyrinka. V jeho pojetí Golem není, oproti původním verzím, hliněná figura, ale přízrak s orientálními rysy, objevující se v určitých historických momentech v pražském ghettu. V práci je zkoumáno, proč a jak Meyrink transformoval postavu Golema oproti tradiční pověsti, jakou roli hrálo Meyrinkovo ovlivnění okultismem a jinými mystickými naukami, jeho záliba pro spiritismus a orientální nauky. Práce se zabývá tézemi, zda i Meyrinkova negativní zkušenost s pobytem v Praze hrála roli při proměně jeho Golema. Cílem práce je analyzovat, proč a jak Meyrink transformoval postavu Golema.
