The Impact of Puritanism on American Society

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the impact of the Puritan movement on various aspects of American society. First, it outlines its emergence in England, the main characteristics of the phenomenon and its subsequent shaping in British colonies in North America. Drawing upon the primary as well as secondary scholarly literature, the thesis presents and assesses the main legacies of American Puritanism and some dual consequences of its major tenets. Proceeding from the seventeenth-century colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay it attempts to trace connections between the Puritan innovations and practices and later the development of the political, cultural, and intellectual history of the United States of America.

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce zkoumá vliv puritanismu na různé aspekty americké společnosti. Nejprve krátce popisuje vznik tohoto hnutí v Anglii, jeho hlavní charakteristiky a následné utváření v Britských koloniích v Severní Americe. Práce čerpá z primárních i sekundárních zdrojů a snaží se předložit a zhodnotit hlavní odkazy amerického puritanismu a některé protichůdné důsledky jeho klíčových dogmat. Práce zachycuje vývoj kolonií Plymouth a Massachusetts od sedmnáctého století a pokouší se sledovat vztah mezi přínosem a praktikami puritanismu na jedné straně a následnými dějinami politického, kulturního a intelektuálního rozvoje Spojených států Amerických na straně druhé.
