Pronunciation in Learning German at Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Předmětem práce jsou výslovnostní chyby českých žáků učících se němčině jako druhému cizímu jazyku na základní škole. Cílem výzkumu bylo empiricky ověřit, v jaké míře mají žáci obtíže s výslovnostními jevy v němčině, ve kterých čeští rodilí mluvčí obvykle chybují. Dále bylo zjišťováno, jakým způsobem se v těchto chybách projevuje transfer z dříve osvojených jazyků žáka, tj. mateřského jazyka (češtiny) a prvního cizího jazyka (angličtiny). V rámci teoretických východisek popisujeme různá pojetí výslovnosti z hlediska cílů výuky cizích jazyků a zjišťujeme, jakým způsobem je požadavek na výslovnost prezentován v současných pedagogických dokumentech. Pozornost věnujeme různým definicím jazykových chyb a jejich příčinám. Vzhledem k tomu, že k identifikaci chyb přistupujeme na základě kritéria spisovnosti, pojednáváme o vývoji výslovnostní normy němčiny a její kodifikaci. Uvádíme rovněž vybrané tuzemské a zahraniční výzkumy, které různou měrou ovlivnily koncepci našeho výzkumu, a charakterizujeme základní metodické přístupy při zkoumání chyb. Teoretická východiska uzavíráme kontrastivní foneticko-fonologickou analýzou českého a německého jazyka. V rámci empirického výzkumu byla testována výslovnost 11 fonetických jevů v segmentální rovině německého jazyka, které představují typické chyby českých mluvčích. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 50 žáků 9. ročníků z pěti základních škol v Liberci. Jako výzkumná metoda bylo zvoleno hlasité čtení textu. Výslovnost byla posuzována auditivním způsobem třemi rodilými mluvčími německého jazyka. Výzkum ukázal, že chybovost většiny testovaných jevů dosahovala poměrně vysokých hodnot. S výjimkou labializovaných vokálů přední řady a vokalického r se pohybovala v rozmezí 73–97 %. Z analýzy jednotlivých chyb vyplynulo, že k nim dochází převážně následkem negativního transferu z češtiny. Jednotlivé odchylky ve výslovnosti korespondovaly s očekávanými chybami na základě kontrastivní foneticko-fonologické analýzy češtiny a němčiny. V případě posuzování konsonantického r lze hovořit o pozitivním transferu z češtiny, jelikož žáci /r/ realizovali jako alveolární vibrantu [r], která je v češtině jedinou ortoepickou variantou a v němčině patří k jedné ze tří kodifikovaných výslovnostních variant. Transfer z angličtiny byl zaznamenán v ojedinělých případech výslovnosti konsonantického a vokalického r.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with pronunciation mistakes of Czech pupils learning German as a second foreign language at elementary school. The aim of the research was to empirically verify the extent to which pupils have difficulties with pronunciation phenomena in German, in which Czech native speakers usually make mistakes. The investigation followed the way these errors manifest themselves in the transfer from the pupils' previously acquired languages, i.e. their mother tongue (Czech) and the first foreign language learnt (English). Within the theoretical foundation, we describe different concepts of pronunciation in terms of foreign language teaching objectives and we discover how the pronunciation requirement is presented in current pedagogical documents. We focus on various definitions of language errors and their causes. Considering the identification of errors being based on the literal criterion, we discuss the development of German pronunciation standard and its codification. We also present selected domestic and foreign researches that have influenced the concept of our research to various extents. We characterize basic methodological approaches to error analysis. We conclude the theoretical foundation with a contrastive phonetic-phonological analysis of Czech and German languages. In the empirical research, we tested the pronunciation of 11 phonetic phenomena in the segmental level of German language, which represent typical mistakes made by Czech speakers. The research sample consisted of 50 pupils of the 9th grade from five Liberec elementary schools. Reading aloud was chosen as a research method. The pronunciation was assessed in an auditory manner by three native German speakers. The research has indicated that the error rate of most of the phenomena tested was relatively high. It ranged between 73–97 %, with the exception of labialized front row vocals and vocal r. The analysis of the individual errors revealed that this is mainly caused by negative translation from Czech language. Individual deviations in pronunciation corresponded with the expected errors based on a contrastive phonetic-phonological analysis of Czech and German. In the case of the consonant r, we can speak of a positive transfer from Czech. The pupils implemented the /r/ as an alveolar vibrant [r], which is the only orthoepic type in Czech and one of the three codified pronunciation types in German. English translation was recorded in isolated cases of pronouncing consonantic and vocal r.
