Professional identity of students of psychology

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá utvářením profesní identity studentů psychologie. V teoretické části práce je představena problematika spadající do teoretického rámce profesní identity. Nejprve je vymezeno období vynořující se dospělosti a jeho základní charakteristiky. Druhá kapitola práce se zabývá vymezením profese psychologa, třetí kapitola je věnována konkrétně profesní identitě. Cílem kvalitativní studie bylo porozumět tomu, jak studenti psychologie vnímají utváření své profesní identity a popsat jejich profesní cíle, zájmy, hodnoty a aspirace. S tímto cílem souvisí také zkoumání motivů, které vedly studenty k volbě oboru, jejich spokojenosti se studiem a představ vztahujících se k budoucnosti. Data jsou analyzována pomocí metody zakotvené teorie. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo deset studentů magisterského studia psychologie. Pomocí analýzy a interpretace dat vznikl model utváření profesní identity, který specifikuje vztahy mezi jednotlivými kategoriemi a subkategoriemi, které vyvstaly z analýzy dat. Studenti psychologie, kteří se zúčastnili tohoto výzkumu, dosáhli díky studiu psychologie velkého osobnostního rozvoje a sebepoznání. Aktivně se zajímají o psychologii v praxi, na formování jejich profesní identity mají největší vliv praktické zkušenosti z oboru, ke kterým se v průběhu studia měli možnost dostat blíže a různé zážitkově zaměřené předměty. Většina studentů, kteří se výzkumu zúčastnili, se dlouhodobě vedle studia věnují některé z aplikací psychologie, jejich profesní identita dosahuje dle Hollandovy definice (viz kap. 3. 1.) vysoké úrovně rozvinutosti.

Abstract:

The presented work deals with the vocational identity formation of psychology students. The theoretical part introduces the theoretical framework of vocational identity. First, it defines the period of emerging adulthood and its basic characteristics. The second chapter deals with the definition of the profession of psychologist, the third chapter is devoted to vocational identity. The aim of the qualitative study was to understand how students perceive the development of their vocational identity and to describe their career goals, interests, values and aspirations. The themes like exploration of motives that led students to select the field of study, their satisfaction with the study and ideas concerning the future are also related to this goal. The data are analyzed using grounded theory method. Ten students of master´s degree in psychology participated on the research. By analyzing and interpreting the data the model of the formation of vocational identity has been created, which specifies the relationships between categories and subcategories that emerged from data analysis. Psychology students who participated in the research achieved great personal development and self-knowledge during psychology studies. They are interested in psychology in practice. The most influential to shaping their vocational identity appears to be real experiences from the field and variety of practically-oriented subjects. Most students who participated in the research, in addition to long-term studies work in some applications of psychology, their vocational identity achieves a high level of development according to Holland´s definition (see Chapter 3. 1).
