Aspects of Eastern Religion Traditions in Metal Music and Subculture

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on examining the use of aspects of Eastern religious traditions, specifically Buddhism and Hinduism, by extreme metal bands. These aspects are manifested in terms of text and visuals, including live performances. Bands work with them to different degrees and with different motivations, in the form of references or the use of symbols taken from individual religions, up to bands whose concept is built entirely on one of the traditions. The work, therefore, examines how these aspects are embedded in the discourse of extreme metal and how they complement or even replace the Western occult and demonological discourse from which metal music draws. Within the work, five leading bands of the extreme metal scene are analyzed, which use these elements in their work. These are specifically bands: Dissection, Behemoth, YOB, The Firstborn, and Cult of Fire. The work aims to contribute to a wider field of research of religious elements in metal music and subculture.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zameriava na skúmanie využitia aspektov východných náboženských tradícií, konkrétne buddhizmu a hinduizmu, u kapiel extrémneho metalu. Tieto aspekty sa prejavujú po textovej a vizuálnej stránke vrátane živého vystupovania kapiel. Kapely s nimi pracujú v rozličnej miere a s odlišnou motiváciou, a to v podobe odkazov alebo využitia symbolov prebratých z jednotlivých náboženstiev, až po kapely, ktorých koncept je vystavaný kompletne na jednej z tradícií. Práca skúma ako sú tieto aspekty zasadzované do diskurzu extrémneho metalu a ako v jeho rámci dopĺňajú či dokonca nahrádzajú západný okultný a démonologický diskurz, z ktorého metalová hudba čerpá. V rámci práce je zanalyzovaných päť popredných kapiel extrémne metalovej scény, ktoré tieto prvky vo svojej tvorbe využívajú. Jedná sa konkrétne o kapely: Dissection, Behemoth, YOB, The Firstborn a Cult of Fire. Zámerom práce je prispieť do širšieho poľa skúmania religióznych prvkov v metalovej hudbe a subkultúre.
