Oscar Wilde: Ballad of Reading Gaol Analysis, Examination of Its Literary and Historical Impact on the British as well as Czech Society

Abstract:

The main goal of this work is to provide a partial analysis of the Ballad of Reading Gaol and examine its literary-historical impact on the British as well as Czech society. Every analysed translator, based on their education and literary experience, skilfully used the work of their predecessors and imprinted their personal style and taste on the final product. However, they all retained the depiction of the gloomy prison conditions. Above all others, it is essential to praise the translators? approach to their readers who consequently made sure all the available copies swiftly vanished from the book stores. The fact that hardly any copies are to be found in the book stores around the country can serve as evidence proving the utmost popularity of the various translations of the Ballad of Reading Gaol.

Abstract:

Částečný rozbor Balady o žaláři v Readingu a literárně-historický dopad včetně reakce kritiky v anglické a naší společnosti je hlavním cílem této práce. Každý překladatel na základě svého vzdělání a literárních zkušeností využil práci předchozího překladatele a vtiskl překladu svůj styl a vkus, ale především zachoval ponurou atmosféru vězení. Zejména je nutné ocenit přístup překladatelů ke čtenářům, kteří nenechali žádné jejich vydání na pultech ladem a s dychtivostí a zájmem je skoupili a četli. A jak jsou ceněny překlady Balady o žaláři v Readingu od Oscara Wildeho svědčí skutečnost, že v knihkupectvích ani v antikvariátech nejsou k dostání.
