Online dating in old age: Causes of failure

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá příčinami neúspěšných vztahů navázaných na internetu u lidí v období raného stáří. Reaguje tak na problematiku navazování vztahů ve stáří a rozšíření používání internetu jakožto způsobu k nalezení partnera v tomto věku. Byly provedeny polostrukturované rozhovory s devíti respondenty ve věku od 60 do 66 let a ty byly analyzovány metodou zakotvené teorie. Z analýzy vyplynula dvě dominantní témata související s neúspěchem: Zaprvé fakt, že starší lidé nemohou najít na internetu vhodného partnera, což se pojí s věkem jakožto handicapem při navazování vztahu, dále pak se vzhledem partnera, kde může nastat diskrepance mezi sebeprezentací na internetu a skutečným vzhledem, a v poslední řadě neochotou být ve vztahu pečovatelem či živitelem. Druhou příčinou jsou pak rozdílné představy o vztahu a neochota při-způsobit se. Ty se projevily hlavně v představách o sdílení domácnosti, životním stylu, dále pak pocitu „být na vedlejší koleji“ či v rozporu mezi požadavkem na vážný vztah a vztahem založeným na sexu. Obecně se dá říci, že za mnohými neúspěchy mohou stát specifické požadavky či obtíže pojící se se stárnutím. Ukázalo se, že je velmi komplikované začlenit nový vztah do zaběhnutého stylu života, návyků nebo existující sociální sítě (např. rodina či přátelé). Tato práce si klade za cíl přispět svými poznatky k lepšímu pochopení navazování vztahů na internetu či obecně v tomto vývojovém období a také k zmapování potřeb lidí Třetího věku.

Abstract:

Presented study is focused on causes of online and offline unsuccessful relationships in old age. It deals with the issue of new partnerships in the old age and with extension of using internet as a way to find a partner in this age. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with people in age of 60-66 years and then analyzed by grounded theory. Two dominant topics connected to the failure were found by the analysis. The first one is the fact that older people cannot find the suitable partner online which is connected to the age as a handicap in dating, then to the partner appearence where discrepance between the online self-presentation and the actual apperance can take a place, and lastly reluctance of being the caretaker or the provider in a relationship. The second cause includes different ideas about the relationship and reluctance to adjust. It was obvious in ideas of living situation, lifestyle, then in „taking a back seat“ or in the discrepance between serious relationship and sex-based relationship. Generally speaking, specific needs or dealing with getting old can be seen as causes of failure of partnership in this age. It was shown that integration of new partnership into current lifestyle, habits or already existing social network (e.g., children and grandchildren) can be complicated. Presented study with its findings aims to contribute to a better understanding of new online but also offline partnerships in this age and to explore needs of people in Third age.
