Josef Václav Myslbek and his monument of cardinal Bedřich, prince of Schwarzenberg

Abstract:

Pomník kardinála Schwarzenberga vytvořil již zralý J.V. Myslbek na sklonku 19. století. Jedná se o jedno z jeho vrcholných děl. Klečící figuru pojal Myslbek ve stylu individuálního pojetí realismu, kterým se značně odlišoval od soudobé tuzemské umělecké produkce. Sochař zde naplno zúročil svůj cit pro portrétní charakteristiku. Zároveň však kardinálovu postavu monumentalizoval a vytvářil z intimní podobizny velkorysý pomník. Inspiraci pro Schwarzenbergovu sochu Myslbek čerpal z motivů evropského i českého sepulkrálního umění. Pro bližší pochopení umělcových východisek je důležité seznámení s jeho další tvorbou, okolnostmi vzniku díla a v neposlední řadě i exkurz do sochařova osobního života.

Abstract:

The monument of cardinal Schwarzenberg was raised by already adult J.V Myslbek at the end of the 19th century. It is one of his masterpieces. A kneeling figure is shown in the style of individual realism which made Myslbek very different from domestic art production of that time. The sculptor fully used his feelings for portrait characteristics. Also, he monumentalized cardinal´s figure and thus, out of an intimate portrait, he created a majestic piece. European and Czech sepulchral art was used by Myslbek as an inspiration for Schwarzenberg´s sculpture. To understand the artist´s starting points it is important to be familiar with his other works, the circumstances of the monument´s origin and it is also necessary to make an excursus into a sculptor´s personal life.
