Overthrowing the Government:Rebellion Against Control of Society in Dystopian Literature

Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je porovnání tří významných děl dystopické literatury – 1984 (1949) od George Orwella, Hladové hry (2008) do Suzanne Collinsové a Dárce (1993) do Lois Lowry, a dokázat za pomoci analýzy těchto tří románů, že nedávný vý-voj v dystopické literatuře jako žánru poskytuje prostor a příležitost pro lehčí způsob svrhnutí utlačující síly, namísto toho, aby varovala před nemožností úniku z takovéhoto režimu. Nejen, že se všeobecná idea protagonisty dystopického románu přesunula z muže ve středních letech na dítě či teenagera, ale i cílové publikum se změnilo jako od-raz tohoto faktu. Moderní dystopie kritizují společnost světa či jednotlivé společnosti zemí po celém světě odlišným způsobem a vybírají si odlišné koncepty jako problema-tiku románů. Výše zmíněné práce jsou analyzovány z rozličných perspektiv a tato práce je rozdělena na kapitoly podle způsobu útlaku. Na závěr jsou tyto způsoby útlaku zesu-marizovány a aplikovány na poslední kapitolu, která porovnává odpor a rebélii ve třech románech, které jsou v této práci analyzovány. Hlavním argumentem této práce je, že nedávný vývoj v dystopické literatuře nabízí příležitost ke svrhnutí vlády či utlačitele hrozící rebélií tím, že úroveň útlaku vyvíjená na společnost klesá. Úvodní kapitoly nabízí stručné porovnání trendů v dystopické literatuře v čase, kdy byla poprvé publikována kniha 1984 a nedávné trendy v tomto žánru, stejně tak nabízí i shrnutí analyzovaných románů. První čtyři kapitoly této práce analyzují a porovnávají ekonomiku, emoční útlak, sledování a technologii v těchto třech románech a argumentují, který ze tří utlačovatelů v nich prezentovaných je nejúspěšnější ve kterém z aspektů útlaku a proč. Na závěr tyto kapitoly vyvodí, že ačkoli pozdější romány uvádí koncepty, které mohou být pro prů-měrného člověka v 21. století děsivější, jsou méně efektivní, jelikož utlačitelé v pozděj-ších dílech se příliš opírají o nespolehlivou technologii a odkrývají svoje vlastní nedo-statky. Na závěr jsou tato fakta zahrnuta v analýze toho, jak a proč byly rebélie v poz-dějších dílech úspěšné, zatímco dřívější 1984 skončila neúspěchem odporu, a také proč současná dystopická díla končí pozitivněji, než ta v minulosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to compare three major works of dystopian literature – Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) by George Orwell, The Hunger Games (2008) by Suzanne Collins, and The Giver (1993) by Lois Lowry, and to prove with the help of the analysis of these three novels that the recent developments in dystopian literature as a genre pro-vide a space and an opportunity for an easier way to overthrow the oppressive force rather than warning against the inescapability of such a regime. Not only did the general idea of a protagonist for a dystopian novel shift from an older man to a child or a tee-nager, but also the target audience shifted in a mirroring way. Modern dystopias criticize the society of the world or even individual societies of countries around the world in a different way and choose different concepts as the main problematic for the novels. The aforementioned works are analyzed from different perspectives and the the-sis is divided into chapters by means of oppression. Finally, these means of oppression are summarized and applied on the last chapter which compares the resistance and re-bellion in the three works analyzed in this thesis. The main argument is that the recent development in dystopian literature offers an opportunity for the government or an op-pressor to be overthrown by an imminent rebellion by lowering the levels of oppression imposed on the society. The introductory chapters offer a brief comparison of trends in dystopian litera-ture at the time Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published and the recent trends in the genre as well as summaries for the analyzed novels. The first four chapters of the thesis analyze and compare economy, emotional oppression, surveillance, and technology in the three novels and argue which of the three oppressors presented in the works is most successful with each of the aspects and why. Ultimately, the chapters conclude that while the later works introduce concepts that may be scarier to an average person in the twenty-first century, they are less effective as the oppressors in the later works rely too much on unreliable technology and expose their own flaws. Finally, these facts are included in an analysis of how and why the rebellions in the later works succeeded while the earlier Nineteen Eighty-Four ended with the resis-tance’s failure, as well as why do the contemporary dystopian works end on a positive note than the ones in the past.
