The construction of the transcontinental railroad in the USA in the 1860s.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se soustředí na budování Transkontinentální železnice v USA v 60. letech 19. století. V práci je popsaná především situace v USA před zahájením stavby a poté samotný průběh budování železnice. Práce v sobě skýtá prostor pro analýzu jednotlivých projektů předkládaných vládě USA, ze kterých následně byla vybrána nejvhodnější varianta. V rámci tohoto tématu je pozornost věnována stavebnímu procesu a celkově toto téma je zasezeno do ekonomické, sociálního a kulturního rámce amerických dějin. Konkrétně se práce soustředí například na analýzu nálad, názorů a reakci společnosti na plánovanou a následně probíhající výstavbu. Pozornost je také věnována ztrátám na životech se stavbou souvisejících. Práce nadále popisuje problémy, ke kterým v procesu docházelo a v závěrečné části autor hodnotí celkový význam vybudované transkontinentální železnice pro dějiny USA.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad in the USA in the 1860s. In particular, the thesis describes the situation in the U.S. prior to the start of construction and then the actual process of building the railroad. The work in itself provides space for analysis of the various projects submitted to the U.S. government, from which the most suitable option was then selected. Within this theme attention is paid to the construction process and the overall theme is embedded in the economic, social, and cultural framework of American history. Specifically, the the thesis focuses, for example, on analyzing the sentiments, opinions, and reactions of society to planned and then ongoing construction. Attention is also given to the loss of life associated with construction. The thesis goes on to describe the problems that occurred in the process, and in the final section the author assesses the overall significance of the transcontinental railroad to U.S. history.
