Narrative of Success in Selected American Fiction

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tématem úspěchu v americké klasické literatuře a zaměřuje se na to, jak různí autoři zobrazují americký sen, jeho alternativy a úskalí. K tomu využívá faktů a interpretací historického kontextu a analyzuje vybraná díla americké literární fikce z konkrétních období. Těmito díly jsou The Great Gatsby (1925), Little Women (1868), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), a Fight Club (1996). Opírá se o důkazy podložené historickým kontextem i americkou literaturou ze specifických období. Práce je rozdělena do pěti kapitol, které nabízí pohled na téma úspěchu a zahrnuje pochopení kulturního prostředí tím, že analyzuje americké příběhy o úspěchu. Tato práce zahrnuje období od druhé poloviny 19. století do konce 20. století. Na základě analýzy literatury a základních souvislostí představuje alternativní přístupy k dominantnímu uvažování, degeneraci amerického snu a jeho omezenou dostupnost a potřebu alternativních cest k osobnímu naplnění.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the theme of success in American fiction, focusing on how different authors depict the American dream and its alternatives. To achieve this, it draws on evidence from the historical context and analyzes selected pieces of American novels from specific periods, including The Great Gatsby (1925), Little Women (1868), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), and Fight Club (1996). The paper is organized into five chapters that provide views of success while offering an improved comprehension of the cultural setting by tracing the history of American narratives of success, spanning from the second half of the 19th century to the late 20th century. By analyzing primary literature and underlying background, the paper presents alternative approaches to the dominating narrative, the degeneration of the American Dream and its limited availability, and the need for alternative routes to personal fulfillment.
