Abstract:

Předmětem této práce je zanalyzovat šest negativních recenzí autobiografie Elizabeth Wurtzelové o jejím životě a boji s depresi, Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America, a následně ukázat, jak tyto odrážely celospolečenský postoj k lidem trpícím duševními chorobami ve Spojených státech amerických v devadesátých letech dvacátého století. Práce nejprve rozděluje recenze na základě jejich kritiky do čtyř skupin, týkajících se egocentrismu knihy, autorčiny důvody na její napsání, idealizováním deprese, a zesměšňováním a osobními útoky na Wurtzelovú. Práce dále podává detailní informace k tématu duševní zdraví ve Spojených státech a ilustruje, jak moc zakořeněné byly předsudky vůči mentálně nemocným na konci dvacátého století. Snaží dokázat, že autoři recenzí byli zaujatí a poskytuje argumenty, proč jejich kritika není opodstatněná. Práce také zdůrazňuje hodnotu knih o mentálním zdraví, protože díky nim může společnost porozumět tomuto tématu, což má potenciál vést k úplnému odstranění jakýchkoliv předsudků vůči lidem trpícím mentálními chorobami.

Abstract:

This work analyzes six negative reviews of Elizabeth Wurtzel’s memoir about her life and battle with depression Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America and subsequently illustrates how they reflected the unfavorable attitude of American society towards people suffering from mental illnesses in the 1990s. First, it divides the reviews into four categories based on the main points of their critique, focusing on the egocentrism of the work, Wurtzel’s romanticized depiction of depression, her reasons for writing the book, and on personal attacks and ridicules. The work continues to give a considerably detailed socio-cultural background on the topic of mental health in the United States and illustrates how deeply rooted the various prejudices towards the mentally ill were in the last decade of the twentieth century. It argues that the reviewers of Prozac Nation are highly biased in their criticism and provides arguments why their negative reception is unjustified. The work also emphasizes the importance of narratives about mental health struggles, mainly because they enable society to learn about and understand the complexity of these issues, which can lead to abolishing the stigma mentally ill people have to face daily.
