The development of the inflation rate in Türkiye

Abstract:

Turecká ekonomika dlouhodobě čelí přetrvávající dvouciferné inflaci, kterou se i přes řadu stabilizačních programů či aktivní monetární politiky TCMB nepodařilo dosud dostat pod kontrolu. Cílem práce je identifikovat faktory, které měly vliv na vývoj míry inflace v Turecku od 80. let až do současnosti za aplikace ročních dat od roku 1965–2007 a měsíčních dat v období mezi lety 2006–2020. Pomocí vektorové autoregrese (VAR) s analýzou výsledků variační dekompozice, reakce impulzivní odezvy a průběhu reziduí byl v práci odhadnut dopad jednotlivých makroekonomických ukazatelů na inflaci. Z podstatné časti období zachyceného ročním modelem se inflace v Turecku vysvětluje vlastními změnami. Její vysoká volatilita hraje v krátkém období zásadní roli pro její budoucí vývoj. Značný podíl na vysvětlení změn inflace představuje i světová cena ropy, monetární agregát M1 a vývoj kurzu turecké liry vůči dolaru. Dlouhodobá dvouciferná hladina inflace v období mezi lety 2006–2020 byla zapříčiněna významným kombinovaným efektem vývoje světové ceny ropy a znehodnocení turecké liry vůči dolaru. Práce prokázala i důležitou roli růstu státního dluhu na obecnou míru inflace.

Abstract:

The Turkish economy has been facing persistent double-digit inflation, which has not been effectively brought under control, despite several stabilization programs and the active monetary policy of the TCMB. The aim of the work is to identify the factors that influenced the development of the inflation rate in Türkiye from the 1980s to the present. To achieve this, annual data from 1965–2007 and monthly data in the period 2006–2020 were used. More specifically, the impact of individual macroeconomic indicators on inflation was estimated in this work by applying vector autoregression (VAR) with the thorough analysis of the results of variation decomposition, impulse response, and the course of residuals. For a significant part of the period covered by the annual model, inflation in Türkiye feeds itself. Its high volatility playes a crucial role in its future development in the short term. In addition, the world price of oil, the monetary aggregate M1, and the exchange rate of the Turkish lira to the dollar are also of considerable importance in explaining changes in inflation. The long-term double-digit level of inflation in the period 2006–2020 was caused by a significant combined effect of the development of the world price of oil and the exchange rate of the Turkish lira to the dollar. The work also demonstrates the significant role of the growth of the national debt on the general inflation rate.
