Representations and values attached to urban life in early modern novels

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je věnovaná reprezentaci města a městského způsobu života v raně moderním románu. Prostřednictvím techniky obsahové analýzy a zakotvené teorie analyzuje romány Oliver Twist Charlese Dickense a Citová výchova Gustave Flauberta a definuje vlastnosti města a hodnoty zobrazené v těchto románech. Charakteristiky města, nalezené v románech, se shodují se sociologickým pojetím města, prezentovaným v pracích F. Tönniese, E. Durkheima, K. Marxe, G. Simmela, L. Wirtha, S. Milgrama, R. Sennetta, a D. Hummona, na nichž se zakládá teoretický rámec této práce. Vlastnosti města nalezené v románech jsou rozdělené do tří skupin. Jsou to obecné vlastnosti města, rysy městského způsobu života a rysy obyvatel města. Romány reprezentují město jako sídlo velkého počtu lidí, bydlících blízko vedle sebe. Město je popsáno jako nekomfortní a nebezpečné prostředí. Pro „literární“ město je charakteristická rozšířená dělba práce, heterogenita obyvatelstva, rozšířená sociální stratifikace, prostorová segregace lidí, patřících k různým skupinám, anonymita a formalita interakcí, racionalita, široké spektrum pracovních, vzdělávacích a rekreačních příležitostí. Typickým rysem obyvatel města je individualismus, který se projevuje v usilování o karierní růst, úspěch, slávu, moc, a nezávislost. V diskusi práce analyzuji to, jak společenské postavení ovlivňuje reprezentaci města a městského života.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is devoted to the representation of the city and the urban way of life in the early modern novel. With the use of content analysis and grounded theory it analyzes Charles Dickens` Oliver Twist and Gustave Flaubert`s Sentimental Education, and it defines the features of the city and its values, that are displayed in these novels. Characteristics of the city found in these novels correspond with the sociological concepts of the city presented in the works of F. Tönnies, E. Durkheim, K. Marx, G. Simmel, L. Wirth, S. Milgram, R. Sennet, and D. Hummon, which shape the theoretical framework of this thesis. The thesis divides the properties of the city found in the novels into three groups. General characteristics of cities, the features of an urban lifestyle and characteristics of the population of the city. These novels represent the city as the seat of a large number of people who live close together. They describe the city as an inappropriate and dangerous environment. Widespread division of labor, the heterogeneity of population, the expanded social stratification, the spatial segregation of people belonging to different groups, the anonymity and the formality of interactions, the rationality, and a wide spectrum of work, educational and recreational opportunities characterizes the literary city. A typical feature of the city`s population is individualism that manifests itself in the pursuit of career growth, success, fame, power, and independence. In the discussion, this thesis analyzes that social status affects the representation of the city and the urban life.
