Trauma Theory and Bibliotherapy in E. Lockhart’s Novels

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na zobrazení fenoménu traumatu ve třech románech pro mládež, Genuine Fraud (2017) (Nesvá), We Were Liars (2014) (Ostrov Lhářů), a Again Again (2020), současné autorky E. Lockhart. Teoretická část kombinuje literárněkritickou perspektivu teorie traumatu s historickým a současným přístupem k tomuto fenoménu. V první kapitole jsou zohledněna relevantní kritická východiska literární teorie. V druhé části jsou identifikovány klíčové prvky teorie traumatu a související symptomy traumatu. Třetí část zahrnuje prvky traumatu v mýtické literatuře a relevantní přehled žánru literatury pro mládež (young adult). Kapitola o biblioterapii identifikuje praktické využití získaných poznatků. Vhodné charakteristiky jsou analyzovány v primárních textech pomocí metody pozorného čtení (close reading).

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the portrayal of the trauma phenomenon in three young adult novels, Genuine Fraud (2017), We Were Liars (2014), and Again Again (2020), by contemporary author E. Lockhart. The theoretical part combines a literary-critical perspective of trauma theory with the historical and present-day approach to this phenomenon. The first chapter considers the relevant critical background of literary theory. Second, vital elements of trauma theory are identified, together with trauma symptoms. The third part includes trauma features in mythical literature and a relevant overview of the young adult genre. Finally, a chapter on bibliotherapy identifies practical applications of the findings. Suitable characteristics are analysed in primary materials using the close reading method.
