Interpretation of songs by Benjamin Britten with the focus on a song cycle Cabaret Songs

Abstract:

Hlavním smyslem této práce je rozšířit povědomí o písňové tvorbě Benjamina Brittena a o tom, jak ji ze strany interpreta uchopit. Teoretická východiska demonstrujeme na interpretačním rozboru písňového cyklu Cabaret Songs. Zaměříme se na několik dílčích aspektů vybraného díla: vznik zkoumaného cyklu, vlivy kabaretního žánru a překlad textů písní ve spojení s konkrétními výrazovými prostředky, jako jsou melodie, rytmus, tempo, agogika nebo dynamika. Nabyté poznatky ověříme komparací vybraných nahrávek.

Abstract:

The main purpose of the thesis is to spread the knowledge about the song work of Benjamin Britten and about the way how to grasp it. We will demonstrate the theoretical starting points in the interpretative analysis of a song cycle Cabaret Songs. We will focus on the specific aspects of the cycle: genesis of the cycle, influence of the cabaret, translation of the lyrics in conjunction with particular means of expression, like melody, rhythm, tempo, agogics and dynamics. We will verify the acquired knowledge by comparing the selected recordings.
