Role of ritual in building of collective identites: AVA collective according to contemporary subcultures theories

Abstract:

Diplomová práce předkládá případovou studii, která metodou fokusované etnografie zkoumá roli rituálu v procesu konstrukce skupinové identity členů a příznivců brněnského kolektivu AVA. Cílem práce je porozumět procesu utváření skupinové identity skrze rituály, mezi které patří hudební akce AVA jako např. koncerty nebo rave parties. Dalším cílem práce je kolektivní identitu AVA popsat ve vztahu k současným teoriím subkultur. Z výsledků analýzy vyplývá, že rituály jsou mechanismem aktivního budování kolektivní identity. Skupinová identita komunity okolo kolektivu AVA má nejblíže identitě neo-kmene. Existující teorie subkultur však plně nepostačují pro analýzu této komunity. Diplomová práce navrhuje nový přístup k jejich zkoumání. Hlavním emocionálním účinkem rituálu AVA je rituální „vibe“, který je zároveň zdrojem subkulturního kapitálu komunity.

Abstract:

This thesis is a case study using a method of focus ethnography. The empirical research analyses the role of rituals on creating and maintaining of a collective identity with a focus on the Brno-based promoter-artists‘ collective AVA. The aim of this study is to analyze whether, and how, the music concerts, the rave parties, and various music sessions of the AVA collective, that are presented as rituals, shape the collective identity of fans and audience of AVA, and how this can be perceived in reference to the contemporary theories of subcultures.
