Antiquity and Ancient Sources in the Travel Book of Christopher Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice

Anotácia:

Harantův cestopis je spíše encyklopedií než cestopisem. Je složen z velkého množství intertextů pocházejících z dlouhého období od starověku po autorovu současnost. Harantův vlastní text se místy mezi množstvím převzatých informací ztrácí. Z mnoha časoprostorových rovin, které do textu vstupují v rámci popisu cesty i prostřednictvím citací autorit, byla vybrána rovina pohanské antiky. Po cestě ke svému cíli, Svaté zemi a Sinajskému poloostrovu, autor projížděl prostorem po staletí formovaným antickou civilizací Řecka a Říma, a tato skutečnost se významně promítla právě v cestopisu. Náplní práce je rozbor jednotlivých oblastí, v nichž autor využívá poznatků antických autorů, a zhodnocení jeho nakládání s těmito intertexty. Cílem práce je ukázat, jakým způsobem pracuje humanisticky vzdělaný, vědecky založený Kryštof Harant s informacemi antických autorů přebíranými z primárních zdrojů i z tradice a jakým způsobem jej při tom ovlivňuje jeho křesťanská víra.

Abstract:

The travel book of Christopher Harant is rather an encyclopedia. It consists of many intertexts coming from various ages, from the antiquity to author’s contemporaneousness: from time to time Harant’s own text loses in plenty of information taken over from other authors. There are many spatio-temporal plans in the travel book entering the text either within the description of the voyage or through quoting the sources, and from them the plan of the pagan antiquity has been chosen for the research. On the way to the Holy Land and the Sinai Peninsula the author traveled a space that had been formed by the ancient Roman and Greek culture for centuries and it influenced the travel book greatly. The thesis focuses on the analysis of the particular fields where Harant uses the ancient sources and attempts to review his treating these intertexts. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how the well-educated humanist, scholar-minded Harant processes the information of the ancient authors taken both from the primary sources and the adaptation made by the tradition, and what influence exercises his Christian faith on him.
