Study of mechanical properties and microstructure of hard carbon-based protective coatings

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na studium mechanických vlastností, termální stability a mikrostruktury dvou zástupců tvrdých vrstev na bázi uhlíku: nc-TiC/a-C:H vrstev s nanokompozitní mikrostrukturou a nanolaminátových Mo-B-C vrstev s potenciálním využitím jakožto ochranných povlaků v průmyslových aplikacích. První část práce se zaměřuje na studium termální stability nc-TiC/a-C:H vrstev, k jejichž přípravě byla použita metoda hybridního PVD-PECVD s reaktivním plynem acetylenem. Jelikož mechanické vlastnosti těchto vrstev závisí na jejich chemickém složení, konkrétně na podílu koncentrací titanu a uhlíku, byly vyrobeny celkem tři vzorky, každý s vrstvou jiného chemického složení. Tyto vzorky pak byly žíhány a byly měřeny závislosti jejich mechanických vlastností na teplotě žíhání, k čemuž byla využita celá řada různých analyzačních technik. Ukázalo se, že termální stabilita těchto vrstev závisí na chemickém složení a bylo pozorováno diametrálně odlišné chování vrstvy s přebytkem titanu oproti vrstvě s přebytkem uhlíku. Hlavní příčinou většiny termálně indukovaných jevů byl únik vodíky z amorfní uhlíkové matrice. Druhá část práce se zabývá komplexním studiem Mo-B-C vrstev a otázkou souvislostí jejich mechanických vlastností a mikrostruktury s depozičními podmínkami. K přípravě těchto vrstev bylo využito rozprašování třech terčů: B4C, Mo a C s pulzním režimem aplikovaného výkonu. Byl zkoumán vliv předpětí a teploty zahřívání substrátu během depozice na výsledné mechanické vlastnosti. Ukázalo se, že Mo-B-C vrstvy mohou být vyrobeny s tvrdostí okolo 27 GPa a efektivním modulem pružnosti 450 GPa a zároveň vykazovat velmi vysokou odolnost proti lomové deformaci – nesrovnatelně větší než u standardních průmyslově používaných keramických povlaků.

Abstract:

This work is devoted to study of the mechanical properties, thermal stability and microstructure of two representative carbon-based hard protective coatings: nanocomposite nc-TiC/a-C:H and nanolaminated Mo-B-C coatings with potential utilization as protective coatings in industrial applications. The first part of this work is focused on the study of thermal stability of nc-TiC/a-C:H coatings which were prepared by hybrid PVD-PECVD technique with acetylene as reactive gas. Since the mechanical properties of these coatings strongly depend on their chemical composition, more precisely on the ratio of titanium to carbon concentrations, three samples were prepared, each with a coating having different chemical composition. These samples were subjected to annealing and the dependencies of their mechanical properties were measured as a function of annealing temperature – for this purpose, many different experimental analyses were carefully chosen. It was shown that the thermal stability of these coatings also strongly depends on their chemical composition and completely different thermal behaviour was observed for the case of the titanium-rich coating when compared to the carbon-rich coating. The main reason for most of the thermally induced changes was the hydrogen loss from the amorphous carbon matrix. The second part of this work is focused on a complex study of the Mo-B-C coatings and a connection between their mechanical properties and microstructure and the chosen deposition conditions. The sputtering of three targets: B4C, Mo and C with pulsed applied power was used for preparation of these coating. It was studied the influence of the bias voltage and heating applied to the substrate holder on resulting mechanical properties. It was shown that the Mo-B-C coatings can be prepared with hardness around 27 GPa and effective elastic modulus of 450 GPa which is accompanied with high crack resistance – incomparably higher than in case of ceramic protective coatings standardly used in industry.
