Shorter working hours in the Czech Republic: good or bad idea?

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca analyzuje vplyv skráteného pracovného času na zamestnanosť. Začína sa s historickým prehľadom pracovného času a poskytuje vysvetlenie klesajúceho trendu pracovného času pozorovaného v OECD krajinách a zvlášť v Českej Republike. Empirická časť používa korelačné koeficienty na posúdenie vzťahu medzi pracovným časom, prácou na čiastočný úväzok a mierou zamestnanosti. Na základe poznatkov tejto analýzy tvrdíme, že skrátenie pracovného času sčasti formou podpory práce na čiastočný úväzok môže byť efektívnym nástrojom na zníženie nezamestnanosti. V súčasnosti je využívanie tohto typu úväzkov v Českej Republike veľmi obmedzené.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the impact of reduced working hours on employment. It begins with a historic overview of working time and provides an explanation for the decreasing trend in the working hours observed in OECD countries and particularly in the Czech Republic. The empirical part evaluates the correlation coefficients to assess the association between working hours, part-time work and employment rate. Based on the findings from this analysis, we suggest that a policy of shorter working hours can be used to increase employment. This may be partly achieved by a wider use of part-time work in the Czech Republic.
