The Juxtaposition of Recent Photography Theory

Anotácia:

Práce Juxtapozice současné teorie fotografie se zabývá situací současné fotografie (deskriptivní a inscenované) na poli umění v rámci různých vědeckých diskurzů, zejména estetiky a dějin umění. Opírá se o přehled vývoje současné fotografie podle Roberta Silveria, který je dále rozveden o estetickou teorii zabývající se fotografií od Rogera Scrutona. Teze neschopnosti fotografie být reprezentujícím uměním je dále rozvedena o teorii kritika Michaela Frieda, která vychází z jeho knihy Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before. Na základě těchto teorií vyvozuje závěr o možnostech vnímání fotografie jako umění v rovině několika odlišných přístupů. Tyto přístupy jsou nakonec prakticky aplikovány na myšlenky Charlese Baudelaira, jehož esej Malíř moderního života si vzal za program své tvůrčí práce uznávaný fotograf Jeff Wall.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis The Juxtaposition of Recent Photography Theory examines the situation of contemporary photography (both descriptive and staged) in different scientific discourses, especially aesthetics and art history, in the field of art. The analysis is based on the survey of contemporary photography by Robert Silverio and on the aesthetic photography theory by Roger Scruton. The hypothesis of the photography being unable to be representing art is further elaborated in the theory of criticism by Michael Fried, based on his book Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before. Based on these studies, the thesis summarizes the perception of photography as an art in the perspective of several different approaches. These approaches are finally applied to the ideas of Charles Baudelaire, whose essay The Painter of Modern Life inspired the work of a well-known photographer Jeff Wall.
