Description of Concentration Camps in the Letters, Memories and Diaries of Prisoners.

Abstract:

V první části mé diplomové práce shrnuji základní informace o koncentračních táborech, jejich historii, vznik a vývoj. Více se zde věnuji koncentračnímu táboru Buchenwald, jelikož tam byl vězněn můj pradědeček, Josef Kolář. Tento tábor je také spjat se jmény Josef Čapek a Emil Filla, jejichž básnické sbírky Básně z koncentračních táborů a Psí písně v Buchenwaldě představují jakýsi únik myšlenek těchto autorů z děsivé reality. V druhé části se zabývám vybranými literárními díly non-fikční literatury, které zachycují Buchenwald. Zaměřuji se především na autory, kteří Buchenwaldem prošli. Nelze charakterizovat všechny, pro celkový obraz tábora jsem analyzovala díla J. Hajšmana V drápech bestie, vzpomínky na Buchenwald, dále Záznamy z Buchenwaldu od Lva Sychravy a dílo Buchenwald varuje Jiřího Žáka a Jana Strnada. Krátce se zde věnuji teorii non-fikční literatury a charakteristice memoárové literatury. Poslední kapitola se zabývá dopisy z koncentračních táborů. Vycházím především z rodinného archivu. Dochovaly se nám dopisy zasílané J. Kolářem z Terezína a Buchenwaldu. Podrobněji je zde analyzuji a srovnávám s dalšími dopisy z koncentračních táborů, Antonína Pokorného a Františka Janoucha. Okrajově se zaměřuji na cenzuru, co bylo možné psát, jak často mohli vězni posílat dopisy či je dostávat. Vzniká tak soubor velice zajímavých lidských dokumentů.

Abstract:

The first part of my thesis summarizes basic information about the concentration camps, their history, origin and development. I focus on the concentration camp Buchenwald. My great-grandfather Josef Kolar was imprisoned there. This camp is also linked with names such as Josef Čapek and Emil Filla, whose poetry collections Poems of concentration camps and Buchenwald Dog songs represent a kind of escape of the ideas from these authors frightening reality. The second part deals with selected literary works of non-fiction literature of Buchenwald. The focus is mainly on authors who were in Buchenwald. It is not possible tocharacterize all of them, for the overall picture of the camp, I analyzed some works of J. Hajšman Claws of the beast, The memories of Buchenwald, and also Records from Buchenwald by L. Sychrava and Buchenwald warns by J. Strnad J. Žák. There is also shortly mentioned the theory of non-fiction literature and characteristics of memoirs. The last chapter deals with the letters from concentration camps. It is mainly based on the family archive. There are preserved letters which were sent by J. Kolar from Terezin and Buchenwald. More details are here analyzed and compared to other letters from concentration camps written by Antonin Pokorny and Francis Janouch. Marginally I focus on censorship, the charge of sending letters, how often inmates could send letters or to receive them. The result is a set of very interesting human documents.
