Theoretical and artistic interpretation of The Seven Cardinal Sins according to Dante La Divina Commedia.

Abstract:

The selected subject-matter of the thesis, „ Seven Deadly Sins“ will by based on two fundamental parts, on a practical and theoretical platform. In the theoretical part we will noticeably reflect the study of philosophical, theological and theoretical treatises, based on the history of aesthetic thinking, which depict the matter of sin from the beginning to the end of the middle ages. The analysis of sin through a notable personification of figures, characters, behaviour and attributes, implicitly builds on Dante Alighieri`s early Renaissance work. Here, the focus is on the interpretation of the seven vices ridding themselves of their sins in the Purgatory. The personification of the Purgatory is based on the scholastic conception of Thomas Aquinas` Summa Theologica. The study of the historical material is the most important basis for us, which ensures a competent theoretical and artistic reflection of the motif of The Cardinal Sins. The thesis is outlined into seven study drawings grounded on the above mentioned theoretical platform. These seven created artworks form a mutually correlated story. Their internal conjunction is the intrinsic sequence of action, the content separateness of each part of the story. Particular sequences are characterized by inner dramaturgical construction and culmination. The whole conception and the narrativeness of the story is thus transferred from one artwork to another. On the contrary, every single part might act as an independent accomplished artefact. It has its conclusion and dramatic culmination, however it is able to induce continuance. Such form of continuity might be comprehended as a compositional principle dividing the story according to its content and formal aspects into several series. Both in the written and artistic part of the thesis we participate in the modelling of the figures of each sin, in the plot of the story and in the hypertrophy of emotions. According to the aesthetic expressional categories it is quasi a creation of artwork series accompanied by a text. The created set of artefacts is not modelled just on the basis of a valuable artistic expression, but mostly on the perspective of historical scientific studies. The work with the expressive features of fine art is oriented to the transmutations of the shape, colour and surface. These artistic metamorphoses arise from the authentic human body sketches and their (de)formation. The created signs represent the phenomena of the reality in a way which allows the artwork to function as an external symbol, referring to a particular meaning in the collective consciousness. The sign vindicates the immanent sense of cognition reflecting the inner features transformed into symbols of the outer reality. The seven artworks build on the application of qualitative methods, like elaboration and expanse. Focusing our work on the figure is symbolically important for us. It allows to always reveal new cognitions and to mediate the ideas conditioned by a noticeable fragmentation, deformation, stratification, reversion or reflection, in a more transparent way. In order to come to terms with the subject-matter it is crucial for us to base its artistic realization on a firm philosophical basis.

Zvolenú tematiku diplomovej práce siedmych kardinálnych hriechov budeme stavať na dvoch základných častiach, na teoretickej a na praktickej platforme. V teoretickej časti budeme markantným spôsobom odrážať štúdium filozofických, teologických a teoretických spisov vychádzajúcich z dejín estetického myslenia, ktoré líčia problematiku hriechu od začiatku až po koniec stredoveku. Analýza hriechu v markantnej personifikácii postáv, charakterov, správaní a vlastností, implicitne svojim obsahom nadväzuje na dielo ranej talianskej renesancie Dante Alighieriho. Tu sa zameriame na výklad siedmych nerestí zbavujúcich sa svojich hriechov na Očistvovej hore. Personifikáciu Purgatoria opierame o scholastickú koncepciu predovšetkým Tomáša Akvinského a jeho Sumy teologickej. Štúdium historického materiálu je pre nás najdôležitejším podkladom a zárukou pre kompetentnú teoretickú a umelecko-výtvarnú reflexiu. Diplomová práca je koncipovaná do siedmych študijných kresieb vytvorených na spomínanej teoretickej platforme. Sedem vzniknutých výtvarných diel vytvára navzájom spolu súvisiaci príbeh. Ich vnútorným spojivom je vlastná dejová postupnosť, obsahová uzavretosť každej časti príbehu. Jednotlivé sekvencie sú charakteristické vnútornou dramaturgickou výstavbou a vypointovaním. Celá koncepcia a naratívnosť príbehu sa tak prenáša z jedného dielu do druhého. Na druhej strane každá časť môže vystupovať aj ako samostatný dopovedaný artefakt. Má svoje ukončenie a dramatické vyvrcholenie, ale zároveň je schopná navodzovať pokračovanie. Takúto formu seriálovosti môžeme chápať ako kompozičný princíp rozdeľujúci príbeh po obsahovej a po formálnej stránke do viacerých sérií. V písomnej i výtvarnej časti participujeme na modelovosti postáv každého hriechu, deji príbehu a hypertrofii emócií. Z hľadiska estetických výrazových kategórií ide kvázi o vytvorenie výtvarného seriálu doprevádzaného textom. Vzniknutý seriálový artefakt modelujeme na základe nie len hodnotného výtvarného výrazu, ale predovšetkým z hľadiska historickej vedeckej štúdie. Práca s vyjadrovacími prvkami výtvarného umenia je zameraná na premeny tvaru, farby, povrchu. Tieto výtvarné metamorfózy vychádzajú z autentickej reality figurálnych štúdií ľudského tela a zámernej anatomickej (de)formácie. Vytvorené znaky zastupujú javy skutočnosti tak, aby výtvarné dielo mohlo fungovať ako vonkajší symbol, ktorému zodpovedá v kolektívnom vedomí určitý význam. Znak sa stáva obhajobou imanentného zmyslu poznania odzrkadľujúceho vnútorné rysy pretransformované do symbolov vonkajšej reality. Sedem výtvarných artefaktov budujeme na základe použitia kvalitatívnych postupov ako elaborácia, expandovanie. Symbolicky dôležitá je pre nás práca s uhlom pohľadu na figúru, ktorý umožňuje odhalenie vždy nového poznania a jasnejšie sprostredkovanie myšlienky podmienené markantnou fragmentáciou, deformáciou, vrstvením, reverziou alebo zrkadlením. Pre skutočné vyrovnanie sa s tematikou je pre nás dôležité jej výtvarné podchytenie na pevnom filozofickom základe.
