Ripeness Theory and its application on the Northern Ireland conflict

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce má několik cílů. Za prvé přináší teorii zralého momentu (Ripeness Theory) do českého politologického prostředí. Teorie zralého momentu je ve světě již etablovaným přístupem v rámci oboru řešení konfliktů a mírových studií. Její autor, I. William Zartman, se domnívá, že je možné určit ve vnitrostátním konfliktu moment, kdy je vhodné započít negociace. Za druhé se předkládaná práce pokusí aplikovat prvky zralého momentu (a její redefinované verze – teorie připravenosti) na případ severoirského konfliktu a na základě provedené analýzy posoudit užitečnost a pravdivost této teorie.

Abstract:

This paper has a few aims. Firstly, it brings the Ripeness Theory in the Czech political science environment. Ripeness Theory is well known and established among conflict resolution scholars in the world. Its author, I. William Zartman, suggests that it is possible to point out the exact moment in the interstate conflicts that is the most suitable for the start of the negotiations. Secondly, this paper applies the components of Ripeness Theory (and its redefinition version – Readiness Theory) on the Northern Ireland conflict in order to analyze utility and verity of this theory.
