Deciding about motherhood in the life course of women over thirty

Abstract:

Tématem disertační práce je rozhodování o mateřství (bezdětnosti) v kontextu životního běhu žen starších třiceti let. Mateřství je v současné společnosti představováno jako záležitost osobní volby, přestože je zároveň spojeno s řadou sociálně a kulturně definovaných podmínek a norem a vnímáno jako významná součást ženství. Ženy při rozhodování o mateřství musí brát v úvahu řadu různých faktorů a tento proces může být komplikovanější víc než kdy dříve. Specifikem českých žen, rozhodujících se o mateřství nebo časujících mateřství do doby po dosažení třiceti let věku, je navíc socializace v odlišném politickém a demografickém režimu, než v jakém se ocitly na počátku svého reprodukčního období. Do jejich života zasáhly změny související s porevoluční transformací české společnosti. Proč tyto ženy nenásledovaly chování svých matek a mateřskou fázi posunuly ve srovnání s nimi až do pozdějšího období nebo zůstávají dosud bezdětné? Výzkum sleduje způsoby, jakými ženy konstruují své životní dráhy, jaký význam přikládají mateřství v kontrastu s ostatními sférami svého života, jak se rozhodují o mateřství, jakými faktory jsou při tomto rozhodování ovlivněny. Práce využívá kvalitativní design a logiku výzkumu, konkrétně konstruktivisticky pojatou zakotvenou teorii a polostandardizované rozhovory jako nástroje sběru dat. Rozhovory proběhly v letech 2006-2010 a byly vedeny s 20 prvorodičkami po třicítce a 15 bezdětnými ženami stejného věku (v době rozhovoru bylo nejstarší účastnici výzkumu 43 let). Výsledky analýzy jsou členěny do kapitol, jejichž návaznost odpovídá logice nově budované teorie. První z těchto kapitol shrnuje klíčové podmínky rozhodování o mateřství z pohledu žen a rekonstruuje pět typů reprodukčních strategií. Ostatní kapitoly identifikují zdroje těchto strategií. Druhá analytická kapitola sleduje ustavování nové životní fáze v životním běhu žen a poukazuje na její nezamýšlené důsledky, především vznik tzv. individualizačního habitu blokujícího přechod do mateřské fáze. Třetí kapitola vyzdvihuje působení původní rodiny na rozhodování o mateřství a prostřednictvím tzv. přímých a nepřímých odkazů ukazuje, jak může mít individualizační habitus svůj původ už v období socializace v dětství. Poslední dvě kapitoly blíže rozebírají zkušenosti partnerských vztahů a situací a zkušenost placené práce a vysvětlují, jak jejich kombinace různými způsoby blokuje přechod k mateřství. Dosažení nezávislosti a samostatnosti žen ve sféře práce a zároveň jejich přesvědčení o neschopnosti mužů vyrovnat se jim v oblasti domácnosti a péče o dítě může vést k odmítání společného soužití a ke zvyku na samostatný životní styl. Individualizační habitus je upevňován v souvislosti s genderově nevyváženým rozložením rolí v orientační rodině i v partnerských vztazích v dospělosti.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with deciding about motherhood (childlessness) in the context of the life course of women over thirty. Motherhood is represented as a matter of personal choice in the current society, even though it is also connected with a range of socially and culturally defined conditions and norms and perceived as a significant part of womanhood. Women have to take into consideration a variety of different factors when deciding about motherhood, and this process may be more complicated nowadays than ever before. The specificity of Czech women deciding about motherhood and timing motherhood in the period over thirty is that they socialize in a different political and demographical regime than they were in at the beginning of their reproductive period. Why did these women decide not to follow the behaviour of their mothers and shifted the motherhood phase into a later period of their lives or still remain childless? The research observes the ways in which women construct their life courses, how important is motherhood for them in contrast with other spheres of their lives, how they decide on motherhood and what factors influence their decision. The thesis utilizes qualitative design and the logic of research, in particular constructivist version of grounded theory and semi-standardized interviews as the tools for data collection. The interviews were conducted between 2006 and 2010 and the interviewees were 20 primiparas over thirty and 15 childless women of the same age (the oldest interviewee at the time of the interview was 43 years old). The results of the analysis are organized in chapters that follow the logic of the newly built theory. The first chapter summarizes the key conditions important for women deciding about motherhood and reconstructs five types of reproductive strategies. Remaining chapters identify sources of those strategies. The second analytical chapter investigates the foundation of the new life phase in the life courses of women and shows its unintended consequences, especially emergence of so called individualised habitus that blocks their transition to the motherhood phase. The third chapter emphasizes the influence of the family of origin on deciding about motherhood and by means of direct and indirect messages shows how individualised habitus can be rooted in the socialization in childhood. The last two chapters analyze in more detail experience with relationships and situations and experience with paid work. These chapters explain how the combination of those factors blocks the transition to motherhood in various ways. Reaching independence and autonomy at work together with the opinion that men are not capable of matching them in the field of housework and taking care of children may lead women to the rejection of living in the common household with men and to the habit of living individually. Individualised habitus is reinforced by the unequal distribution of gender roles in the family of origin as well as in the partnerships in adulthood.
