Religiosity and psychotherapy: How psychotherapist's religiosity presents when working with clients

Abstract:

This qualitative explorative study concerns with a topic of psychotherapist̛ s religiosity and how it presents when working with clients in Czech republic. Eleven roman catholic czech psychotherapists were intervie-wed and transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. Faith of these psychotherapists reflects in the process of psychotherapy in several ways: implicitly, through God´s presence in psychotherapy, through faith as a positive resource for psychotherapists and a specific faith-based value system, while emphasizing that religiosity is psychotherapist̛ s private thing and he is trying not to impose his religious values, judge-ments and attituteds on a client; and explicitly, through confrontation with religious content brought into psychotherapy by the client, through religious clients and through using religious interventions and tech-niques. These findings are discussed in relation to the concept of religiosity gap, training, supervision and multicultural competencies of a religious psychotherapist working with various clients.

Abstract:

Kvalitatívna exploratívna štúdia sa venuje otázke odrazu psychoterapeutovej religiozity v práci s klientami v Českej republike. Pomocou metódy tematickej analýzy boli analyzované rozhovory s jedenástimi českými psychoterapeutmi s rímskokatolíckym vierovyznaním. Viera psychoterapeutov sa v procese psychoterapie odráža niekoľkými spôsobmi: implicitne, prostredníctvom Božej spouúčasti na procese psychoterapie, viery ako pozitívneho zdroja pre psychtoerapeuta a hodnotového systému vychádzajúceho z vierovyznania, pričom terapeuti podčiarkujú charakter svojej viery ako súkromnej záležitosti, snažiac sa neovplyvňovať klienta a explicitne, prostredníctvom kontaktu s klientom, prinášajúcim tému viery do psychoterapie, prípadne s veriacim klientom a využívaním religióznych techník a intervencií. Zistenia sú diskutované v kontexte fenoménu religiosity gap a vo vzťahu k vzdelávaniu, supervízii a k multikultúrnym kompetenciám psychoterapeutov v otázkach spirituality a religiozity.
