Resting behavior in Ungulates

Abstract:

V této práci jsem se snažila shrnout co největší množství informací o odpočinkových a spánkových vzorcích kopytníků. Definice spánku se shodují v tom, že se jedná o reversibilní stav snížené reaktivity na podněty, z čehož vyplývá, že spící a odpočívající zvířata jsou vystavena vyššímu predačnímu tlaku. Ke snížení rizika slouží polyfázový spánek a zkrácená doba trvání REM fáze spánku. Rozložení spánku během dne mezidruhově liší, ale většina kopytníků je soumračná, což znamená, že vrcholu aktivity dosahují za soumraku a za úsvitu. Vrchol odpočinku pak většinou nastává kolem poledne, kdy je nevyšší okolní teplota. Změny klimatických podmínek v rámci roku pak vedou k tomu, že většina kopytníků je v zimě méně aktivní, jelikož odpočinkem šetří energii. Zjistila jsem, že doba odpočinku je u kopytníků eliminována potřebou se často pást z důvodu nízké nutriční hodnoty potravy. Větší zvířata musí potravy přijmout více než menší zvířata, tudíž musí investovat více času do pastvy, a tím s rostoucí velikostí klesá množství času stráveného odpočinkem. Obecně samci tráví odpočinkem více času než samice. Na množství času stráveného odpočinkem má vliv také hierarchické postavení v rámci skupiny, jelikož pro výše postavené jedince je snazší naplnit své nutriční potřeby, takže mohou odpočívat déle. Mláďata tráví odpočinkem více času než dospělí. Jen malé množství kopytníků si vytváří nějaký úkryt či brloh pro spánek, většinou využívají úkryty mezi stromy či křovím. Výběr odpočinkového místa záleží také na klimatických podmínkách, v chladném prostředí se zvířata snaží najít závětrná místa a v horku zase stín, jelikož během spánku klesá schopnost termoregulace. Poloha pro spánek a odpočinek se odvíjí od velikosti zvířete a hloubky spánku - poloha ve stoje je specifická pro větší zvířata a lehký spánek. Naopak poloha vleže je specifická pro menší zvířata a hluboký spánek. Sternální ležení je důležité pro správné zažívání u přežvýkavců.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I attempted to summarize the maximum information about restíng and sleeping patterns of the ungulates. Definitions of sleep agree, that it is a reversible state of decreased reactivity to stimuli, which suggests, that sleeping and resting animals are exposed to higher predation pressure. Polyphase sleep and the shortened duration of the REM sleep phase serve to reduce the risk. The distribution of sleep varies between species, but most ungulates are crepuscular, which means that they reach the peak of their activity at dusk and dawn. The peak of the rest usually occurs around noon, when the ambient temperature is highest. The changes in climatic conditions during a year, lead, in most ungulates, to a decrease of the activity in winter, because they save energy by resting. Most studies also show that the rest period is in ungulates eliminated by the need to often feed due to the low nutritional value of their food. Larger animals must eat more food than smaller animals, therefore they have to invest more time in grazing, so the tíme spend resting decreases with increasing size. In general, males rest more often than females except for the heat. The amount of time spent resting is also affected by hierarchic position within the group, because the fulfillment of the feeding needs is easier for the individual with higher group status, so they can rest longer. Infants spend more time resting than adults. Only a small number of ungulates create some shelter or den for sleep, most of them use covert between trees or bushes. The choice of the resting place depends also on climatic conditions, in cold environments animals attempt to find leeward places and the shade in the hot environment, as the ability of thermoregulation decreases during sleep. The position for sleep and rest depends on the size of the animal and the depth of the sleep - the standing position is more common for larger animals and lighter sleep. Conversely, the lying position is specific for smaller animals and deep sleep. Sternal lying is important for proper digestion in ruminants.
