Culture and Nature on Speaking Terms Again: Dynamic Balance and Omnipresent Interconnectedness in the Fiction of N. Scott Momaday and Barbara Kingsolver

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá dvěma současnými americkými romány, konkrétně Prodigal Summer Barbary Kingsolverové a House Made of Dawn N. Scotta Momadaye. Práce v podstatě sleduje jednotlivé hrdiny na cestě „k sobě“, k čemuž využívá ekokritické perspektivy. Analýza se opírá o základní ekologickou premisu, tedy o koncept „propojenosti“ všech věcí, a snaží se dokázat, že není možné striktně oddělovat „přírodu“ od „kultury“, neboť vztah mezi dvěma uvedenými pojmy velmi pravděpodobně nespočívá v jejich neslučitelnosti, ale spíše ve vzájemném doplňování. Práce dokumentuje, že není možné najít sebe sama, aniž bychom brali v potaz „přírodu“, která je nedílnou součástí naší identity. Práce dále dokazuje, že mechanismy, které fungují v přírodě (zvláště princip dynamické rovnováhy), se odráží i v lidském světě a že tedy neexistuje žádný důvod, proč nadřazovat „kulturu“ „přírodě".

Abstract:

The thesis uses the ecocritical lens to analyze two contemporary American novels, Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer and N. Scott Momaday’s House Made of Dawn, focusing on the individual characters’ process of searching for their identity. The analysis leans on the essential premise of ecology, namely on the concept of omnipresent “interconnectedness” and generally attempts to prove that there is actually no clear-cut boundary between what is usually referred to as “nature” and “culture” and that the relationship between the two notions is not to be interpreted in terms of opposition and incompatibility but approached in terms of complementarity and mutuality instead. The thesis documents that it is impossible to find one’s self without incorporating the concept of nature into the puzzle of one’s identity, showing that the mechanisms which function in nature, dynamic balance principle especially, come to be reflected in humans’ world as well. In fact, the thesis demonstrates that there is no reason at all for approaching “nature” and “culture” from a hierarchical point of view.
