Inventory of frankincense trees (Boswellia spp.) on Socotra island with aim to assess the degree of threat for the IUCN Red List

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na zařazení endemických kadidlovníků rodu Boswellia rostoucích v souostroví Sokotra do kategorií Červeného seznamu IUCN. A dále porovnává nové zařazení s hodnocením starým již osmnáct let. Aktuální data o kadidlovnících byla zjištěna pomocí terénní inventarizace probíhající dva roky. Všech sedm taxonů, které mají hodnocení z roku 2004, se posunulo minimálně o jednu kategorii výše, jeden dokonce o dvě. Dva ze tří nově popsaných, tudíž dosud neklasifikovaných taxonů, byly zařazeny jako kriticky ohrožené (CR) a jeden jako ohrožený (EN). Dle dostupných dat je tedy nově klasifikováno sedm taxonů jako ohrožené (EN) a tři jako kriticky ohrožené (CR). Práce se také zaměřuje na negativní vlivy, které ohrožují divoké populace tohoto rodu po celém světě. V závěrečné části jsou jako vedlejší cíl navržena opatření pro ochranu kadidlovníků.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the classification of endemic frankincense trees of the Boswellia genus growing in the Socotra archipelago in the IUCN Red List categories. It also compares new classification with the eighteen-year-old evaluation. Current data about frankincense trees were obtain by field inventory, which took place two years. All seven taxa which are classified from 2004 have moved to at least one category higher and one taxon even two categories. Two of three newly described species, therefore not classified yet, were classified as critically endangered (CR) and one as endangered (EN). According to available data, seven taxa are now classified as endangered (EN) and three as critically endangered (CR). The thesis also focuses on the negative impacts that threaten wild populations of this genus around the world. At the final part the protective measures are proposed as a secondary goal.
