Hurston's "Real Negro Theatre": Participation Observation of the African American Folk

Abstract:

Ve své magisterské práci jsem se zabývala projektem Zory Neale Hurstonové "real Negro theatre" ve vztahu k její autorské dramatické činnosti. Součástí práce je tedy analýza dvou jejích her úzce spojených s tímto projektem - The Fiery Chariot a Spunk. Hlavní myšlenkou mé práce je, že Hurstonová aplikovala metodu zúčastněného pozorování na divadlo tak, aby vyvolala aktivní zúčastnění publika, které se s představeným folklorem mělo identifikovat. Interakce mezi publikem a představením založená na svébytném afroamerickém lidovém výrazu měla být výzvou angloamerické kultuře, což byla její interpretace diskurzu New Negro.

Abstract:

In my master's thesis, I was dealing with Hurston's project "real Negro theatre" in relation to her own work as a playwright. Part of my thesis is therefore formed by the analysis of her two plays closely associated with the project - the Fiery Chariot and Spunk. The main argument of my thesis is that Hurston’s project of the African American theatre can be analyzed from the ethnographic point of view with accordance with the principles of participation observation. With its identification with the performance, the audience was encouraged to participate in order to give rise to an event that challenged Anglo-American aesthetics and perpetuated African American forms of expression.
