In the Shadow of European Co-productions: A Production History of the Film Ve stínu

Abstract:

Práce zpětně rekonstruuje produkční historii českého filmu Ve stínu, jenž byl vyroben v mezinárodní koprodukci s dalšími čtyřmi zeměmi. Mezinárodní koprodukce jsou producenty obecně vnímány jako žádaná, ne-li přimo nutná, strategie jak navýšit rozpočet a proniknout do zahraniční distribuce. Cílem práce je rozkrýt jak institucionální podmínky, vztahy mezi koproducenty a vztahy uvnitř kreativního trojúhelníku poznamenaly film a způsobily, že nedosáhl takového úspěchu, jak si klíčoví aktéři představovali. Práce zkoumá, jak se problémy na těchto tří úrovních promítly do výsledné podoby filmu.

Abstract:

The thesis retrospectively reconstructs the production history of the Czech film Ve stínu, which was made in co-production with four other countries. Producers generally perceive international co-productions as a significant, if not necessary, strategy for both increasing the available budget and penetrating foreign distribution networks. The goal is to explore how various institutional conditions, relationships between co-producers and interactions within the creative triangle impacted the film, resulting in it failing to succeed in the way the main players had anticipated. Focusing primarily on the subject of international co-productions, the thesis examines how issues on the three aforementioned levels affected the film’s final product.
