The first part concentrates on the life of the American photographer, sociologist, journalist and writer above all; the main focus is on the period of taking photos of slum areas of New York. Cílem bakalářské práce je podat ucelený obraz o životě a práci Jacoba Augusta Riise. První část se soustřeďuje na život tohoto amerického fotografa, sociologa, novináře a především spisovatele, přičemž je kladen největší důraz na období jeho fotografování chudinských čtvrtí New Yorku.
