The Fortress of Terezin, constructional development of the fortification from 1790 till the end of 19th century

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaobírá stavebním vývojem pevnosti Terezín od roku 1790 do konce 19. století. Během tohoto období bylo v okolí pevnosti Terezín postaveno několik nových opevnění. Jako první bylo v roce 1813 vystavěno staré předmostí na pravém břehu Labe nedaleko Litoměřic. Toto předmostí bylo tvořeno bastionovým opevněním. Na tomto opevnění byla provedena modernizace, při které byly modernizovány některé objekty a přibyly objekty na levém břehu Labe. Zlom nastal okolo roku 1857, kdy bylo rozhodnuto o výstavbě nového předmostí na pravém břehu Labe, v okolí dnešního kopce Na Valech a na vrcholu kopce Křemín. V rámci nového předmostí na pravém břehu řeky bylo postaveno šestnáct objektů, a to šest fortů, dvě flügelwerk, dvě šance a dvě baterie. Na levém břehu Labe těsně u koryta řeky byly postaveny dvě šance a dvě baterie. Toto nové předmostí bylo během prusko-rakouské války v roce 1866 modernizováno. Z důvodu výstavby železniční tratě Praha Drážďany bylo vystavěno Bohušovické předsunuté opevnění. Největší rozsah mělo během války v roce 1866, kdy se skládalo z devíti objektů, a to jednoho fortu, dvou dělostřeleckých baterií, dvou dělostřeleckých baterií postavených v prostoru kolejiště severní státní dráhy a pěti pomocných objektů. V době prusko-rakouské války byl rozsah pevnosti Terezín největší, skládala se z pěti částí: Hlavní pevnosti, horního a dolního retranchementu se severním šípem, Malé pevnosti, nového předmostí a Bohušovického předsunutého opevnění. Z nejsevernějšího bodu na nejjižnější bod měla pevnost Terezín něco přes 6 km a z nejvýchodnějšího na nejzápadnější bod lehce přes 5km. Od té doby začal upadat význam pevnosti a v roce 1882 bylo rozhodnuto o zrušení pevnosti Terezín, které nabylo platnosti v roce 1888.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the building development of the Terezin fortress since 1790 till the end of the 19th century. During this period, numerous new fortifications were established in the surroundings of the fortress. Firstly, the old bridgehead was built up on the right bank of the Elbe near Litoměřice in 1813. This bridgehead was composed of bastion fortification. This fortification was modernized, some structures were modernized and some new ones were built on the left bank of the Elbe. The turning point occurred in 1857 when it was decided upon construction of a new bridgehead on the right bank of the Elbe in the surroundings of the hill Na Valech and on the top of the hill Křemín. Sixteen new objects were built on the right bank of the Elbe within the framework of the new bridgehead, namely six forts, two flügelwerks, two schanzes and two batteries. On the left bank of the Elbe close by the riverbed, two schnazes and two batteries were built. This new bridgehead was modernized during the Austro-Prussian war in 1866. The new advanced fortification of Bohušovice was established due to construction of railway from Prague to Dresden. The period of its greatest extension was the war in 1866 when it consisted of nine objects, namely one fort, two artillery batteries, two artillery batteries located in the area of the rail yard of the north state railway and five auxiliary objects. During the Austro-Prussian war, the Terezin fortress was of its greatest extension, it was composed of five parts: the Main fortress, upper and lower retrenchment with the northern arrow, the Small fortress, the new bridgehead and the advanced fortification of Bohušovice. The Terezin fortress was just over 6 km long form the northernmost point to the southernmost one and slightly below 5 km form the easternmost to the most westernmost one. Since then, the importance of the fortress began to decline and in 1882 the cancellation of the Terezin fortress was decided upon and it became effective in 1888.
