Territorial dispute between Japan and South Korea: Dokdo/Takeshima Islands

Abstract:

Territorial dispute between South Korea and Japan for the group of small islands in the middle of East/Japan Sea, know under the names Dokdo/Takeshima, is creating tension and diplomatic conflicts between these two countries and is threatening the stability in the region of Northeast Asia for more than half a century. Value of these islands is in their symbolic and emotional importance for the Koreans and in their richness in resources, which are comprised of large amounts of fish and potentially large underwater fields of hydrate methane. In this paper I describe the historic events that led to the creation of Korean-Japanese antagonism and to the creation of this conflict. I describe the geography of these disputed islands and their resource wealth, I analyse the course and the most important events in the conflict of Dokdo/Takeshima from its creation, through the Cold War, up to the events of the last few weeks. I also compile the main proofs which the Republic of Korea and Japan are using for arguing their claim for the ownership of Dokdo/Takeshima, and I give brief list of all the possible solutions to this conflict and its influence on the security situation in the region of Northeast Asia. For these purposes, I'm using the theory of territorial conflicts, theory of democratic peace and theory of classical security complexes.

Abstract:

Územný spor Južnej Kórey a Japonska o skupinku malých ostrovov nachádzajúcich sa vo Východnom/Japonskom mori, známych pod menami Tokdo/Takešima, vytvára napätie a diplomatické konflikty medzi týmito dvoma krajinami, a ohrozuje bezpečnostnú stabilitu v regióne Severovýchodnej Ázie už viac ako pol storočie. Hodnota týchto ostrovov spočíva v ich symbolickom a emocionálnom význame pre Kórejcov a v ich surovinovom bohatstve, ktoré tvoria rozsiahle loviská rýb a tiež potencionálne obrovské ložiská hydrátov metánu. V práci popisujem historické udalosti, ktoré viedli k vytvoreniu kórejsko-japonského antagonizmu a vytvoreniu tohto konfliktu. Venujem sa geografii sporných ostrovov a ich potencionálnym surovinovým ložiskám, analyzujem priebeh a najdôležitejšie udalosti konfliktu o Tokdo/Takešima od jeho vzniku, počas Studenej vojny, až do udalostí posledných niekoľko týždňov. V práci tiež zhŕňam základné argumenty, ktorými Kórejská republika a Japonsko dokazujú prečo Tokdo/Takešima patrí práve im a poskytujem stručné zhrnutie možných riešení tohto konfliktu a jeho vplyv na bezpečnostnú situáciu v regióne Severovýchodnej Ázie. Za týmito účelmi v práci používam teóriu teritoriálnych konfliktov, teóriu demokratického mieru a teóriu klasických bezpečnostných komplexov.
