Akhenaten's Religious Reform: The Earliest Evidence of Monotheism?

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá Achnatonovou náboženskou reformou ve starověkém Egyptě a jejím možným monoteistickým charakterem. Cílem práce je objasnit, zda je přiměřené označovat náboženskou reformu faraona osmnácté dynastie Amenhotepa IV.-Achnatona jako monoteistickou. Po zvážení současné diskuze o monoteismu je nezbytné jeho vlastní vymezení, na jehož základě je Achnatonova reforma posuzována. Práce je založená na dobových pramenech z amarnského období. Tyto prameny je možné rozdělit na písemné (Achnatonův Velký chvalozpěv na Atona, nápisy v hrobkách) a materiální (reliéfy a malby z hrobek v okolí dnešní Tell el-Amarny). Pro cíl práce je třeba se zaměřit na jevy, které se změnou náboženského systému za vlády Achnatona souvisely. Těmito jevy jsou pojetí božství, role samotného faraona a jeho rodiny v reformovaném náboženství, sociální dopad reformy a role tradice, kterou Achnaton v podstatě popírá, ale ze které v jistých prvcích čerpá. Výsledky posouzení těchto aspektů jsou vztaženy do souvislosti s vymezeným monoteismem a je učiněn závěr, který odpovídá na hlavní výzkumnou otázku, tedy do jaké míry byla Achnatonova náboženská reforma monoteistická. Na základě zvážení názorů badatelů, kteří se monoteismem v souvislosti s Achnatonovou reformou zabývají, a uvedených amarnských pramenů, se přikláním k názoru, že Achnatonova reforma mohla být monoteistická ve své inklusivní formě, ovšem tato odpověď není jednoznačná. Reforma procházela vývojem a ve své první fázi ještě ostatní bohy kromě Atona nepopírala.

Abstract:

This work deals in Akhenaten´s religious reform in ancient Egypt and its possible monotheistic character. The aim of this work is to clarify, whether it is reasonable to indicate this religious reform as monotheistic. This reform was the making of the eighteenth dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep IV.-Akhenaten. It is necessary to define monotheism itself, after consideration of the present discussion about monotheism. Subject to the definition of monotheism, Akhenaten's reform is assessed. This work is based on historical sources from the Amarna period. The sources can be divided into written (Akhenaten´s Great Hymn to the Aten, inscriptions in the tombs) and material (reliefs and paintings from tombs in the area of today Tell el-Amarna). It is necessary to focus on phenomena,which were associated with change in the religious system during his reign. These phenomena are concepts of divinity, the role of the pharaoh and his family in the reformed religion, social impact of the reform and the role of tradition. Akhenaten denied the tradition, but he drew from it in certain elements. Results of the assessment of these aspects are related to the context of definition of monotheism, a conclusion is made, one that corresponds to the key question, which is, to what extent was Akhenaten's religious reform monotheistic. I am inclined to the opinion, that Akhenaten´s reform could be monotheistic in its inclusive form, which is based on theories of researchers, who deal with the issue of monotheism in connection with Akhenaten´s reform, and sources from Amarna period. But this answer is not clear, because the reform was developing and in its first phase and did not deny other gods besides Aten.
