Analysis of European Social Survey Data - Trust and Social Capital

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou výzkumu European Social Survey z hlediska konceptů důvěry a sociálního kapitálu. Zaměřuje se zejména na odlišné pojetí těchto konceptů z hlediska jejich individuálního či kolektivního charakteru. Jejím hlavním cílem je ověřit na současné evropské populaci, které z těchto pojetí je vlivnějším determinantem rozložení důvěry a sociálního kapitálu. Výzkum má podobu sekundární analýzy datového souboru ESS 2002. Teoretická část je stručnou reflexí pojetí konceptů důvěry a sociálního kapitálu u nejvýznamnějších autorů a zasazením těchto konceptů do širších sociologických teorií. Poté jsou představeny dvě hlavní teorie vstupující do analýzy: teorie společenského úspěchu a osobního blahobytu a teorie dobrovolné účasti v organizacích. Empirická část je zaměřena na analýzu obou výše zmíněných teorií. Každá z teoriích je testována zvlášť. Teorie společenského úspěchu a osobního blahobytu je testována analýzou celého souboru, na druhou stranu teorie dobrovolné účasti porovnává vybrané země. Na závěr jsou spolu porovnány explanační potenciály obou teorií. Analýza potvrdila, že obě teorie jsou signifikantními determinanty rozložení důvěry a sociálního kapitálu v současné Evropě. Mnohem silnějším determinantem tohoto rozložení ve výsledcích Evropského sociálního výzkumu 2002 se přitom ukázala být teorie společenského úspěchu a osobního blahobytu.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with analysis of the European Social Survey in terms of concepts of trust and social capital. It is focused especially on the different approaches to these concepts in light of their individual or societal nature. The main aim of this thesis is to proof which of these approaches is more powerful determinant of the distribution of trust and social capital in contemporary Europe. This research is designed as a secondary analysis of ESS 2002 data set. The theoretical part consists of a brief reflection of the main sociological approaches to the concepts of trust and social capital and its contextualization in broader theories. Two main sociological theories – the inputs for further analysis – are introduced here: a theory of social success and well-being and a voluntary organizations theory. The empirical part is aimed at the analysis of both abovementioned theories. Each of these theories is tested separately. The analysis of the theory of social success and well-being is conducted on the whole data set; on the other hand, the analysis of the voluntary organizations theory compares only the selected countries. Finally, there is a comparison of the explanatory potentials of both theories. Analysis showed that both theories are significant determinants of the distribution of trust and social capital in contemporary Europe. Also, it was proved that the theory of social success and well-being is more powerful determinant of the trust and social capital distribution in the results of European Social Survey 2002.
