The 21st Century Library. The Evolution and Current State of Town Libraries in the Czech Republic and Germany

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the topic of public libraries in Czechia and in Germany. The theoretical part describes their historical development, impacts of World War II on their activities, and their orientation after 1989. It includes basic definitions of public libraries, specifies the process, their financing together with the methods of measuring their performance. The research section focuses particularly on utilisation of library services by young and adult users. It is based on data gathering by means of a questionnaire as well as financial topics of city libraries in both countries.

Abstract:

Die vorgelegte Bachelorarbeit befasst sich mit der Problematik der öffentlichen Bibliotheken in der Tschechien und in Deutschland. Der theoretische Teil beschreibt ihre historische Entwicklung, ihre Ausrichtung nach dem Jahre 1989. Er umfasst grundlegende Definitionen der öffentlichen Bibliotheken, spezifiziert den Prozess der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien, die Art ihrer Finanzierung und Methoden ihrer Leistungsmessung. Der Forschungsteil konzentriert sich mittels eines Fragebogens vor allem auf die Nutzung ihrer Dienstleistungen durch jugendliche und erwachsene Benutzer, berührt auch die finanzielle Problematik der Stadtbibliotheken in beiden Ländern.
