British Colonial Legacy in Botswana

Abstract:

This thesis examines the main impacts of the British colonial administration on the territory of today's Botswana in the colonial era. The aim of the thesis is to show the positive and negative consequences of the British influence in matters of living standards, education, culture, economy, or civil rights and to determine the extent to which these changes are currently affecting the country. The dataset consists of secondary historiographical literature and documents from the colonial era. The method used in this thesis is based on comparing data from colonial era with current state. The analysis shows that British colonization had a mixed impact on Botswana. British government ruled indirectly, so Batswana could rule themselves in a great manner. They also did not destroy the formal cattle economy and introduced the technology to mine diamonds, which helped Botswana in post-colonial era. The downside of their rule was the taxation during the colonial era that lead to underdevelopment in Bechuanaland and the destruction of the formal Modimo religion.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá hlavní dopady britské koloniální správy na území dnešní Botswany v koloniální éře. Cílem práce je ukázat pozitivní a negativní důsledky britského vlivu v otázkách životní úrovně, vzdělání, kultury, hospodářství či občanských práv a zjistit, do jaké míry tyto změny ovlivňují zemi v současnosti. Soubor dat tvoří sekundární historiografická literatura a dokumenty z koloniální éry. Metoda použitá v této práci je založena na porovnávání údajů z koloniální éry se současným stavem.
