Čvančara family - management of film rental and movie theaters in the interwar and the war period in Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zabývá pražskou rodinou Čvančarových, významných filmových průkopníků. Bratři Ferdinand a František Čvančarovi začali v průběhu dvacátých let dvacátého století sbírat již vyřazené němé filmy, které byly určeny k chemickému zpracování. Podařilo se jim tak zachránit velmi vzácné snímky velké historické hodnoty. Časem vybudovali půjčovnu filmů, která se od ostatních filmových půjčoven lišila unikátní nabídkou filmů, hlavně němých amerických grotesek. Půjčovna poskytovala filmy i mnoha předním osobnostem prvorepublikové kulturní scény. Věnovali se také provozování biografů v Praze i na venkově, například žižkovské letní kino se vyznačovalo specifickou skladbou programu. Práce zahrnuje historické proměny v kinematografii i společnosti během dvacátého století. Cílem je ukázat, jakým způsobem ovlivňovaly podnikatelské aktivity rodiny a zhodnotit její roli v historii české kinematografie. Lze ji chápat také jako ukázku života malopodnikatelů, jejichž živnost byla zničena hned dvěma politickými režimy – nejprve nacistickým a poté komunistickým.

Abstract:

The present bachelor thesis deals with the Čvančara family, important film pioneers from Prague. Ferdinand and František Čvančara brothers started to collect eliminated silent movies determined to chemical processing during the twenties of the twentieth century. In this way, they managed to save rare movies of a great historic value. In the course of time, they established film rental composed of their film collection. The film rental differed from others by unique offer of the films, mainly of the silent American slapstick comedies. The firm also provided films to prominent personalities of the cultural sphere of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The brothers also ran movie theaters in Prague and in the countryside. For example, the Žižkov open-air cinema was characterized by the specific programme of silent movies. In the beginning of World War II, the majority of Čvančara brothers´ film collection was confiscated by Nazis and the running of their rental was banned. Another part of their film property was confiscated after the Communist Coup in February 1948. The thesis is composed of two research subjects. The first focuses on the management of film rental and the second one on the management of movie theaters during the interwar and the war period in Czechoslovakia. There are also included historical changes in the cinematography and in the society as well during the twentieth century. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how these changes influenced on business of the family and to evaluate the role of Čvančara family in the history of the Czech cinematography. It can be also considered as an illustration of the lives of small businessmen whose business was destroyed by two political regimes – at first by the Nazi regime and then by the Communist.
