The Mayan Myths in the Work of Miguel Ángel Asturias

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyse features related to Mayan mythology and religion in the work of Miguel Ángel Asturias. The subject of the analysis is the works called Hombres de maíz and Leyendas de Guatemala. After presenting the basic information about the most important Mayan beliefs, the thesis informs about the origin of the magical realism and the position of Asturias in the world of this literary movement. The practical part brings a detailed analysis of the specific beliefs in both the works. The last pages of this part comment on the linguistic resources used by the author and the questionable existence of the frontier between the myth and the literary fiction in his work. The conclusion of the thesis comments the combination of the real myths and the fictional myth which can be encountered in the work of the author.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat prvky mayské mytologie a náboženství v díle Miguela Ángela Asturiase. Předmětem analýzy jsou díla Kukuřiční lidé a Guatemalské legendy. Tato práce nejprve předkládá základní informace o nejvýznamnějších náboženských přesvědčeních mayské civilizace. Následně informuje o tom, jak vznikl magický realismus a jaká je pozice Asturiase ve světě tohoto literárního směru. Praktická část se zabývá především detailní analýzou konkrétních náboženských přesvědčení a mytologických prvků v obou dílech. Poslední strany této části komentují jazykové prostředky, které autor používá, a spornou existenci hranic mezi mýtem a literární fikcí v jeho díle. Závěr práce se vyjadřuje ke kombinaci reálných mýtů a fiktivního mýtu, která se nachází v díle autora.
